The former athlete had been in hospital three days with a respiratory ailment. As an undergraduate at Stan- ford, Templeton competed in track, football and rugby. He started coaching in 1921 and continued until 1939 when illness forced him to step down. Templeton recovered from his 1939 illness even though his weight at that time dwindled to 95 from 175 pounds. He became a radio commentator and free- lance sports columnist. 'Mary Stewart Is Worlds By JACK SULLIVAN Canadian Press Sports Editor Since the Second World War,| Canadian female athletes have} left the country to gain inter- national fame. And only then did Canadians really appreciate them and turn out by the thous- ands just to get a glimpse of hem. The start really was made when Ottawa's Barbara * Ann Scott won the Olympic and world figure-skating champion- ships, She had won all sorts of titles at home, but she hadn't caught the imagination of Cana- dians until she went to Europe, beat the best in the world and became almost a national hero- ine. It has been the same story) with golfer Marlene Stewart and) skiiers Lucile Wheeler and Anne Heggtveit. Now, thelr modern-day coun- terpart is a little wisp of a girl, 16-year-old Mary Stewart of Vancouver, And if the pattern is continued, she'll just have to go to Australia this year and return home with a gold medal or two from the British Em: pire Games. BROKE RECORD Right now, she's a_ world) champion swimmer. And it's a} good bet she couldn't fill the stands anywhere in Canada. . Just a week ago, 100-pound Mary broke her own world rec- ord in the 110-yard butterfly with a time of 1:07.3. At the same time she smashed the 100- metre world mark of 1:08.0 held by Susan Doerr of Philadelphia. Champ ord at Vancouver's Empire Pool just a few hours before B.C. Lions took on Toronto Argo- nauts in an exhibition football game. And Mary, who is Lions' dancing mascot and entertains the crowd at half - time with some fancy flips, was on hand to keep the crowd in a good mood. "Proving something or other," says Eric (Vancouver Province) Whitehead, "A crowd of 400 was on hand to watch the world record attempt while a mob of 20,166 turned out to watch the sweltering. Fleming Folies at Empire Stadium." Halfback Willie Fleming, a pet with Lions fans, was in top form with a 75-yard touchdown run. REAL STAR LEFT Here's what Whitehead re- ported: "At the end of the ball game, kids gathered around the dress- ing-room runway to applaud the Lions and scream 'yeah, Willie,' but the real star had already. left. "She had slipped out practi- cally unnoticed right after en- tertaining the half-time audi- ence with an eye-catching out- doors version of the twist. She was already homeward - bound for a well-earned rest. "And while the local scene was agog over the gridiron der- ring-do of Willie Fleming, press wires were telling the story of Mary Stewart smashing another couple of world swim records. "Once again the remarkable 16-year-old . . . had lifted Van- What price glory? The younster cracked the rec-| couver out of the realm of the By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS National League AB RH Pet.
