2: an 12 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Soturdey, September 1, 1962 | OASA BANTAM SPORTS ISPORTS MENU Peterborough Boys Oust | CALENDAR By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' Oshawa Connaught Park | | Peterborough Peterborough Bantams de- feated Oshawa Connaught Park boys 9-2; Friday evening in Co- McLEAN'S ESSO, Oshawa's OASA Intermediate "A" entry, takes on Peterborough "Georgies" tonight, here at Alexandra Park, in the third and decdiing game of their East- ern Ontario Zine finals. McLean's tied up the round with a thrilling 6-4 triumph here on Thursday night, When Gary Cope- land hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 9th inning. Local softball fans who witnessed the game here Thursday have it figured out that the advantage of "home grounds" will be just about sufficient margin to give McLean's the edge, enough to win this third and deciding game tonight. This is the only big' sports attraction scheduled around these parts for the holiday week-end. Genosha Aces expected to open their Juvenile "'A" OASA quarter-finals against. the North York--Toronto survivors, this afternoon here, but a protest in this series resulted in a game being thrown out and the third and deciding game was to be played last night at Toronto's Dovercourt Park. We didn't hear who won it, but at any rate, the winners will open their OASA playoff round bourg, in the third game of their Eastern Ontario zone fi- nals, to take the series from |the Oshawa clubs, with two wins and a tie, in the three games| | played. | The Liftlock City lads got two fruns in the first inning and they were never headed, P. Mack- ness opened with a double, Hol- brook ran into his own bunt then Howland, was safe on an lerror and Redmond followed! jwith a double, te make it 2-0. | Oshawa .Connaught Park got a run in the third when Gazdik |singled with one out and scored lon a two-bagger by John Dick and a sacrifice by Glentinning. In the fourth, Rawlinson dou- bled for the Petes and he scored) frame, to complete their nine- run tota!. | Bell, pitching for Peterbor-| ough, held the. Oshawa Con- naugh Park boys well in check. Gillies opened the, fifth with a single and scored on a triple by John Dick, after there were two out, to give Oshawa Con- naught their second and final tally. Oshawa had runners on base in almost every inning but they just couldn't bunch their hits, to get a rally rolling against Bell's steady pitching. B. Howland, with two hom. ers.and a double and Redmond, with three doubles) were the best at the plate for the win- ners with Rawlinson: and R. Mackness also hitting well. Gil- lies, John Dick and Bob. Reid had two apiece for Oshawa. CONNAUGHT PARK --Gil-| TODAY SOFTBALL OASA Intermediate "A" "'Georgies" Oshawa McLean's Esso, at Al- exandra Park, 8.15 p.m.; 3rd and deajding game of series. TUESDAY Inter-County | Rivals In Tie | . Inter - County Softball League rivals, Houdaille Industries and Foley's Plumibng, played to a 2-2 tie Thursday night at Lake- view Park. Dan Kornylo for Houdaille| and Maxwell for Foley's, were) the starting pitchers with Hen- derson repacing Kornylo in the sixth and Lutz taking over for Foley's scored first. Edmond. son hit a home-run in the first} ining, as second batter of the inning. In the sixth; they came from behind to tie it up when Hentig opened with a walk, ad- vanced on Edmondson's sacri- fice and scored on a two-bagger by Lowery, Morden fanned and Georgeff was safe on an error. Next batter, Yuill, connectd for a hit but Lowery was nipped at the plate, trying for the win- ning run. . ; Houdaille's got *a run in the! second stanza when Hanna open: with one out and then with two out, Kornylo smacked a two-| bagger. In the fourth inning, Boivin forced Hanna, after the latter out Fernhill jnight at Storie Park diamond. Storie Park Lads > Put Out Fernhill Storie Park boys advanced to the semi-final round of the Osh- awa Minor Softball 'Associa- tion's Kiwanis Bantam League playdowns for City Champion- ship honors, when they nosed Park 11-10, Jast This was Storie Park's sec- ond-straight win of this quat- ter-final game had resulted in a tie. round but the first Storie had to score three' runs in the bottom of the 7th to win the game after leading all the way until the 7th, when in the top half, Fernhill lads pushed over four runs, without the aid of a single hit, to take a 10-8 lead. Storie Pask had scored a run in the first frame and three in ed with a double, Milne walked|the second, added a pair in the fifth and another pair in the sixth, to lead 8-5. Fernhill got a run in the sixth and then in the top of the 7th, they. ran up four runs when the Storie Park defence collapsed Errors, five of them, plus a cyu- ple of walks, saw Fernhill move in front 10-8 and with darkness closing in, it looked like a tied- up series. But Storie had a big kick left. Chmlowski opened the 7th with a single, Cameron hit safely, then E. Wright tripled, to score his two mates and tie up the score. Clark singled to score E. Wright and that was it. Storie had to_use both Taylor and Solomon for pitching duty in this game, Solomon taking over in the 7th inning. Spiers went all the way for Fernhili. Storie Park lads committed a dozen errors and turned in what was by far, their worst fielding performance. of the entire sea- son. If Fernhill had been hitting, they only had four safeties, they could have won this one handily.
