KATHRYN HAMER CATHERINE WHERRY University Women's Club Selects Scholarship Winners For 1962. The University W.staen's Club of Oshawa and dis'rict has an- nounced the winners of its an- nual scholarships for 1962. WHITBY STUDENT The winner of the first schol- arship of $150 is Kathryn Hamer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. M. Hamer, King s:reet, Whitby. Miss Hamer is a graduate of Henry Street High School, Whit- by. She was a consistently good student who won the Home and School prizes in English, History and Commercial. in Grade 12. This year she has won an Ontario scholarship, an Ed- ward Blake scholarship in Bot- any, Zoology, English and His- tory from the University of To- ronto and the Mrs. Walter Brown scholarship from Vic- toria College. She took an active part in the extra-curricular ac- tivities of the school, playing in the basketball teams and acting as vice-president and then as president of the Girls' Athletic Association. She displayed out- standing leadership qualities as president of the Student Council in 1961 and was one of the best students who have attended the school. Miss Hamer will take Modern History and Modérn Languages at the University of Toronto. OCVI GRADUATES The second scholarship of $100) was given to Catherine Wherry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Er- nest Wherry, Kenneth street, Oshawa. Miss Wherry, a grad- bert Sykes scholarship in middle school science. She has also won an Ontario scholarship. As well as being a fine scholar Miss Wherry showed herself to be a good citizen. She was a mem- ber of the Student Parliament, Literary Editor of the Year Book and a member of the li- brary and badminton clubs and is one of the four girls given permission to enter the Ontario Veterinary College at Guelph this year. Two scholarships of $75 each were given to Lynda Higgins and Carol Crawford graduates of O'Neill Collegiate. Miss Higgins is the daughter of Mr,' and Mrs. E. R. Higgins, LYNDA HIGGINS CAROL CRAWFORD Congregation Gathers To Honor The Reverend and Mrs. D. Luchak The Reverend and Mrs. Dmy- tro Luchak were honored re- cently on the occasion of their 10th wedding anniversary and the 10th year since the ordina- 'tion of Mr. Luchak into the priesthood. About two hundred and fifty guests were present at the banquet in St. John's Hall which was preceded by a short service of thanksgiving in the church. The prayer service was sung by the Very Reverend Joseph Triska of Brantford, Ontario; The Very Reverend Peter Za- paryniuk, pastor of St. Mary's Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church, Oshawa, and the Rev- erend Stephen Hutzuliak, pastor of St. Anne's Greek Orthodox Church in Scarborough, They were assisted by, the church choir under the direction of Mr. Nestor Olinyk. ship from Queen's University, had an honor crest and tab and general proficiency awards in Grade 9 and 12. ' The Reverend and Mrs, Lu- chak were married in St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Greek Or- thodox Church in Andrew, Al- berta. Mr. Luchak was ordain- ed into the priesthood in the Church of the Assum; Holy Virgin Orthodox Church in Vernon, B.C. following the completion of his studies at St. Andrew's Theo- logical College in Winnpeg. Be- fore coming to Oshawa in 1957, he served in parishes in Al- berta. Mrs. Luchak, former Jane Ro- maniuk, completed her teacher training at the' University of Al- berta and taught in the province for a number of years. The cou- ple have two children, Orysia Janice and Taras Laverne who both attend South Simcoe School in Oshawa, The supper was prepared and served by the Sisterhood of St. John's Church,. Both Mr. and Mrs. Luchak spoke briefly thanking the committee in charge and all the congregation|} for their fine co-operation and many acts of kindness and friendship since their arrival in Oshawa.
