hr eer er ers" The Son Of God ILLUSTRATED SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON After two and a half years of His ministry, Jesus asked His disciples who the people thought He was. Then He asked who the disciples thought He was. Jesus was happy when declared Him to be "Christ, the Son of the living God."--Matthew 16: As Christ passed through ee By Alfred Buescher rich tax coll Peter ' saved, repented of his 13-17. climbed a tree for a better view of Him in the crowd. Jesus said, "By this shall all men know that ye are my disci- ples, if ye have love one to another." While they are in the world, they -- like their Master -- are not of the world. But they share His love for those who are held in Setan's power. Let us be sure that we have a place in the church which Jesus Christ is building. BIBLE LESSON Vital Question Asked B By N. SPEER JONES This week we study the next logical subject after God Him- self--God's Son. The announce- ment of this fact--that Jesus was the Son of God--comes in the first passage in today's lesson, a passage which has been called 'the watershed of Christ's ministry" (Peloubet's Select Notes, p- 393), It laid the foundation for the Christian church. Christ how much beliefs do matier, for belief in Christ is the condition jof this salvation. As J. Ritchie | Smith says, "Here is set. forth |the ground of salvation, the love of God; the object, the world; the means, the gift of His Son; the condition, faith; the fruit, eternal life" (Pelou- |bet's, p- 395). : | The third chapter of Ephesi- jans is a passage too rich and \Jong to be explored in detail GOLDEN TEXT "The Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many."'--Mark 10:45. The setting of this important here. The major point for our acene is Caesarea Philippi, allesson is the importance of tf#e city in northern Palestine at "indwelling" of Christ in man, the foot of Mt. Hermon. Long|and its relationship to mans a sacred place, it had been/salvation. called Panias, after the z0d! This feeling is exemplified in Pan, to whom was dedicated a cave there housing a spring which feeds the Jordan. The town was rebuilt by Philip the tetrarch, who named it Cae- éarea after Tiberius, adding his own name to distinguish it from the port of Caesarea. The time of this scene was 29 A.D., about two and a half years after Christ began His ministry. Some of His disciples had been with Him all that time, and all had been with him for at least a year and a half, observing His teaching and the stir it had created. It was time for Christ to ask who people thought He was--and more important, who His disci- ples thought he was. Peter's answer brings Christ # sense of joy and relief, for it indicates God's'revelation of the fact of Christ's Sonship--human instruction had not taught this. Nowhere else does Christ call anyone "blessed." That Peter answered Chrisi's question must not be taken to mean that the other disciples did not also realize Christ's Sonship. Rather it is that, char- acteristically, Peter is the spokesman for the group. The passage from Mark 10, our Golden Text, indicales one of Christ's great purposes in coming into the world--to give His life as a ransom-price for the deliverance of many. The great verse, John 3:16, reiter- ates this purpose in a slightly different way, indicating the motivating factor for it all-- God's love for man. This is further elaborated in John 6:35-40, where Christ indi- cates that He has come to do all this as God's will; it is God's will that man shall find salva- tion. And here we find again the account of the publican's salvation (Luke 19:1-10). Here we see a selfish man, an extor- tionist (a publican was a prof- iteering tax-collector) overcome by Christ's love, so that he rea- lized how unworthy he was-- jand, more important, did every- thing he could to make resti- tution. | AFRICAN VISITORS ESQUIMALT, B.C. They are the 'called out'? who have repented of their sins and believed in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour, Then in Matthew 18:15, His use of the word 'church' is ob-| viously to a local group of be- lievers. If people would follow the direction given here, much trouble in the church would be avoided. The church on earth is far from perfect. Too often, gross sin appears. The first instance) was that of Ananias and Sap- phira seeking to deceive, finally) resorting to open lying. (Acts) 5), In the church at Corinth a man committed fornication.| There developed a party spirit concerning their spiritual lead-' ers which led to friction. There were also other evils.
