24 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tucsdey, November 6, 1962 YWCA Offers World Feilowship And Close Friends To Members Although the existence of the YWCA as a women's organiza- tion in Oshawa goes-back 17 years, it is still in infancy when compared to the life story of the -. organization; the World WCA, which had its begin- nings in mid-nineteenth century England. The coming of the in- dustrial machine age brought a sudden influx of young women into the cities looking 'for work in 'factories, industries of all sorts, and business offices. Around 1855, Mrs. Arthur Kin- eaired opened a residence in London, first for nurses going to and returning from the Cri- mea, and later for all girls from the provinces seeking work in the city. In an effort to allev- fiat the poor working condi- tions, as well as poor living conditions, Mrs. Kinnaired unit- ed her association with Miss Emma Roberts women's group meeting to btcome the first YWCA. Today the "Y" is active in $7 countries, serving uncounted millions of women and girls of every race, creed and color, re- gardiess of their social and economic status. The Oshawa "yy" is one of 52. associations across Canada, and like the oth- ers, is: endeavoring to fill the meeds and demands of our grow- ing community by providing a varied program »f activities for physical fitness, social growth, companionship, and _ learning mew skills. It is a democratic organization, administered through a volunteer-profession- al partnership, using the skills and methods of social work, adult education, health and phy- gical education and Christian education. The active Program Depart- ment, staffed by a Director and an Assistant, has during the past year, provided recreation and instruction in such things as bridge (beginners and ad- vanced), ballroom dancing, trafts such as mosaic tiling and millinery, and sports such as | badminton and swimming for| adults and children. The Moth- given to these countries is in the form of scholarships which en- able the staff members. from associations around the world te study at Canadian Schools of So- cial Work, and thereby give greater direction and impetus to their countries' social and re- creational programs. These activities are all made possible by the work of the staff, assisted by many yvolun- teers, serving on the Board of Directors, Committees, in clubs, and in an Advisory capacity, and by being able to share in the Greater Oshawa Commun- ity Chest. The following officers were elected in February to serve for the year 1962: Hon. Presidents, Mrs. T. K. Creighton Miss Vera Moyse; president, Mrs. Michael Jacula; first vice-president, Mrs. H. S. Social clubs such as the Rendez-vous Club for married womer and the Y-Teens Club fer teen-age girls, provide members with an epportunity for developing s0- cial skills, making friends, plan- ning activities, taking part in stinulating discussions and com- munity projects, along with en- joying good fun and fellowship. This year a new program is offered, giving instruction for *newly-marrieds" and '"'about- > be marrieds" in everything from selecting real estate to home decorating, instruction given by experts in the various fields. The residence for 36 girls and women is maintained with com- fortable rooms and a home-like atmosphere, under the capable guidance and supervision of a residence director. A cafeteria under the supervision of a Food Service Director, privides. the meals~for the residents, and also serves the public. A cater- ing service is available to the community for special events such as weddings, teas, ban- quets and special 'parties. Through the efforts of the World Service Cmmittee, and the Program Department, the Oshawa. YWCA has been able to assist greatly in the work of the World YWCA. By the organ- izing of special projects such as a Card Party or Fashion Show, Show, and the annual | fall Merry-Go-Round Fair, a consid- erable contribution 'has been made each year to assist in @he work of the associations in ether countries where help is badly needed.
