Pert Miss Ackland Works 12-Hour Day BEVERLY ACKLAND SPORTS CALENDAR CALGARY (CP)--Pretty 17- year-old Mary Ackland took up figure skating 10 years ago as a hobby. Now her daily routine is) a good indication that it's be-| come serious business. | She gets up every day at 4 a.m., does her homework until breakfast 'and then heads for the skating rink for two hours of practice on the ice. By then it's 8 a.m, and she's! off to Grade 12 classes at West- ern Canada High school. Two hours more of figure skating after schoo] and she calls it a day. Mary's immediate goal is to pass her American gold medal test in March she already has Canadian golds in figures and dance, but her long-term aim is to win a berth on the Canadian team in the 1964 Olympics in} Japan. | Despite her devotion to skat- ing, however, Miss Ackland is |P far from limited in her inter- ests. | "French and English are my) favorite subjects," she says,| adding that her plan is to ma.-| jor in languages at the. Univer-| sity of California, then head for Europe, perhaps Switzerland, to! teach skating. | Although she's expert with) figures on ice, she admits the} facility doesn't carry over into) the schoolroom--"I just can't) understand that algebra." Her hobbies include landscape oil painting and designing. She) designs all her skating cos-| tumes and her mother makes} them. | Mary has one complaint. "Skating receives the least pub- licity of all Canadian sports." | She implies that this may be) because many persons don't re-| gard figure skating as a real sport but she takes issue with) this view. "T read that skating takes) more calories than any other| sport, As well as physical effort) skating takes considerable men-} tal exertion." | TODAY BASKETBALL Ontario Senior League -- Osh- awa Hawks vs Sarnia, at Sarnia YMCA, 7.00 p.m. SUNDAY HOCKEY OHA Junior "A" Metro League --Neil McNeil Maroons vs Oshawa Generals at Maple Leaf Gardens, 2.00 p.m. and Whitby Dunlops vs Knob Hill Farms, at Maple Leaf Gardens, 3.30 p.m, OHA Junior "B' Metro League' -- Schomberg vs Bow- manville Pic-O-Mats, at Bow- manville Community Arena, 3.00 mM. It is this sort of persistence that brought Londoner Hill the 1962 racing laurels and stamped 'him as the obvious successor to Stirling Moss as Britain's pre- mier four-wheel speedster. In one of the most exciting post-war seasons, 34 - year-old Hill fought a ding-dong battle with countryman Jim Clark for the championship. The final tus- sle--December's South African Grand Prix--saw Clark's Lotus "blow up" because of overheat- ing and Hill's BRM streak over |the line to receive the cham- pagne-filled trophy and tradi- jtional victory wreath. QUIT LOTUS Ironically, until 1960 Hill drove for Lotus. A series of dis- agreements with team chief Colin Chapman and a string of poor races led him to forsake | the Hertford-based team for the | unpredictable cockpit of a BRM. | In 1961 Hill and teammates Richie Ginther.and Alan Marsh \drove BRM, the onetime white jelephant of the racetracks, to i ever Manufacturers' Award -- with Lotus tagging along second. Persistence Rules For Die-Hard Hill T suppose I should say I was a perfectionist," says Hill. "The car is not a separate en- tity--it's an extension of my- self, I am never really satisfied' --I never do a perfect lap." The ex-engineer who once drew unemployment pay and slept in hay-lofts now is in the £10,000 - a - year bracket, He lives in suburban Mill Hill with 'his wife and two children, ad- ministrating a prosperous north London repair shop from a trophy-decked study. NOTED AS HUMORIST Although he has avoided any serious accident on the track, Hill freguently drives in a steel corset to strengthen back mus- cles weakened by a boyhood motorcycle crash, His only con- cession to physical fitness is an occasional workout with a skip- ping r Off Machen Looks For 'ope, the track he is noted as Heavyweight Tiff | SAN FRANCISCO (CP) --| Eddie Machen started on-a dual} search Friday--for the world! heavyweight boxing champion-| ship and a new manager. to guide him to it. Machen, 30, ended a period of psychiatric treatment at a local hospital. He had recently threatened to commit suicide. He says he will no longer fight for manager Sid Flaherty. At a re- cent West End ball he per- formed an impromptu sketch in his underclothes to the delight of press photographers. His piercing eyes, hawk nose and military moustache seem just right for someone who} spends most of his time flirting with death, But Hill admits to a certain amount of trepidation about his profession. "Of course I feel fear. Some- times when I'm going down the straight at 180 miles an hour I wonder what would happen if the wheel came off. "But it is a challenge to over- come it and it makes me go on. A fearless driver could be a menace." ve At home he has a movie of one of his nerve-wracking out- ings on the Brand's Hatch track in Kent. "My heart stops every time I show it,"' he says.
