14 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, Jenuery 30, 1962 CMA Warns Of X-Ray Dangers TORONTO (CP)----The Cana- dian Medical Association Jour- nal warns in its current edition that abdominal x-rays at routine medical examinations may be causing the death of business executives from leukemia. The Journal referred to a re- cent survey in Britain which es- timated that, provided there was no '"'threshold effect," eight per cent of leukemia cases in Britain are caused by diagnostic x-rays and 3.6 by therapeutic x-rays The World Health Organiza- tion estimates that the average exposure to x-rays in North America is about seven times as great as that in Britain. The OMA Journal says the findings of the British study by Dr. Alice Stewart and her col- leagues indicates the proportion of leukemia cases induced by x-rays in North America may be higher than eight per cent Periodic, "executive" health examinations, including x-rays to detect possible cancer of the stomach or bowels, were stud- led by cancer specialists in Britain, the Journal reports. LEUKEMIA INDICATED Dr, Stewart reported that in 500 cases of myeloid leukemia studied there was "definite, measurable incidence of leu- kemia due to x-rays.' The leukemia group was matched with a control group of more than 2,000 individuals of similar age, sex and place of residence. In the case of diagnostic x-rays the leukemia group had received an average of 70-per- cent more radiation exposures to the trunk than the control group. The leukemia group was also found to have received 30-per- cent more therapeutic x-rays than the control group. In Ontario between 1956 and 1960, about 18 in 100,000 men aged between 40 and 65 died from stomach neoplasms (tu- mors), Dr. Stewart's figures suggest about 50 per-cent of these cases could be saved if extreme care was taken before x-rays to en- sure the risk of leukemia is negligible. New Silhouette Leading Theme In Fashions By PEGGY MASSIN PARIS (Reuters) -- Balmain, Chanel, and Ricci have estab- lished a definite new trend for a "compromise silhouette' in women's fashions. Their fash- ions were shown Tuesday. This new silhouette, a leading theme in every house, is fitted at the front and swings free in back. Balmain and Chanel showed modified versions of this idea in coats Nina Ricci gave it dramatic impetus with the kite silhouette, evolved in capes and flying panelled backs that contrast the slender fitted front. Another new trend is toward raised waistlines. The waist has not soared to empire heights. but is indicated by high rise belts, or detached bodices which have been scissored off around the level of the lowest rib. HEMLINES HIGH The second day's showings re- iterate the fact hemlines will stay on the high road. All lengths are established just be- low the kneecap. With the exception of a few black cocktail and dinner dresses shown at Chanel and Ricci, color ran rioutously throughout the collections Tues- day. Balmain features flower-toned suits, picking up the dominant note of the floral, -printed blouses. Prints are less in evi- dence than in past spring sea- sons, but those on hand are so artistic they stand out like search-lights, The designs are unanimously floral, blended in multicolored effects. Ricci's dramatic Oriental sil- houettes for evening wear en- dorse stylized flower patterns on _Shantungs and sheer crepes. Bell Executive Plans To Retire MONTREAL (CP)--H. G.
