Mr. Diefenbaker said the gov- ernment would have introduced two amendments to the Na- tional Housing Act if it had re- mained in office "and will do Four Hospitals Pool Services WINNIPEG (CP) -- Four southern Manitoba hospitals are working cn a plan to cut oper- ating costs and increase effi- ciency by sharing their serv- ices, The plan would enable each hospital to tap the professional resources of the others. It is hoped that collective purchasing can also be arranged, so that supplies can be obtained more economically. Involved in the services mer- ger, which already has seen the appointment of the South-Cen- tral Hospital District Board, are Morden District Hospital, Pem- bina - Manitou Hospital, Pilot Mound Hospital and Crystal City Hospital. Morden Hospital has three doctors, the others one each. They have a total of about 100 beds, but an expansion at Mor- den will give them about 120. The hospitals are in agricul- tural centres. The greatest dis- tance between any two is less than 50 miles. It is Manitoba's first case of integration of services in public hospitals. Executive director H. A. Crewson of the Associated Hospitals of Manitoba, which represents all public hospitals in the province, says the plan seems promising and may be copied elsewhere in the prov- ince. He says it is hoped the scheme will help the hospitals provide more comprehensive medical services. The scheme is expected to be in full operation early next year. "These two measures will e! courage municipalities to ik. . major renewal programs," WILL BROADEN PLAN Mr. Diefenbaker said the ex- isting federal public é plan would be broadened a that there would be a new ea introduced allowing municipali- ties or provincial governments to obtain 90 per cent loans at a low interest from the Central Mortgage and Housing Corpora- tion for the construction or ac-: quisition of public housing proj- ects for low-income families, "These projects would be owned and operated by the | province or municipality or its agent," he said. : "The federal government will make an annual or monthly con- tributicn or subsidy to help to cover the operating losses that might be incurred by such a project." Mr. Diefenbaker said the uni-" versity loans scheme would be) expanded to cover self - con- tained dwellings for married~ students.
