THE OSHAWA TIMES, 27 Wednesdey, February 27, 1963 Bell's Comers Pancake-Flip Bid Fails OTTAWA (CP)--Brash Bell's Corners failed in its. attempt Tuesday night to have one of its housewives named the un- official pancake-flipping cham- pion of the world. The Ottawa suburb, snubbed by the vicar of Olney, England, in its attempt to enter the tradi- tional flapjack flipping contest between Olney and Liberal, Kan., ran off a contest of its own on the community's out- door rink. Contest officials said they would claim the unofficial title if their housewife bettered times posted by the winner in the Liberal and Olney contests. However. Mrs. Thelma Duke, a 3: zcar-old mothcr of three boys, won the Bell's Corners contest in one minute and 20 seconds, That was well below ' the time of one minute, 5.6 sec- onds posted by Liberal house- wife Mrs. Mary Barrington, who earlier Tuesday was crowned official pancake filip- per of the world. RAN 28 YARDS The Bell's Corners race was| run over a 280-yard course 03 the community rink, The ladies) were required to flip their pan-| cakes 10 times while running. The Olney and Liberal con- testants ran 415 yards and flipped. their pancakes -only three times. The Bell's Corners' attempt to enter the. traditional race was| ruled out by Rev. Ronald Col- I Anglican vicar of Olney, organizer of the race. "We get hundreds of dhai- lenges but it has always been our policy that this is just be- tween us and Liberal," he said. CNR Charged With Aiding Union Raid = y{CP)--The Ca-| padian NiGonal Railway has| been accused of helping one un-| ion raid the membership of an-| other. | The publicly -owned carrier immediately denied the charge. The accusation came from A. A, Hutchinson, vice-president of the Order of Railroad. Telegra- phers and was aimed at the CNR and the Canadian Brother- hood.of Railway, Transport and General workers. The executive council of the Canadian Labor Congress, par- ent body of both unions, was to hear the dispute in Ottawa to- day. Mr. Hutchinson said the CNR'e action came because it has a "grand design" to reduce the number of unions represent- ing its employees. He said the CNR has made no secret of its desire to have an industrial union--such as the CBRT -- replace international trade unions wherever possible. CNR FORCED MOVE Mr. Hutchinson quoted CBRT President William Smith as saying the CBRT's drive to sign up hundreds of ORT members "was not of our choosing, but rather the result of: circum- stances forced on us by the management of the CNR." The ORT previously has ac- cused the OBRT of raiding its membership. It said the raid came about as a result of the ONR consolidating its freight- express services. The 33,000.member CBRT had no immediate comment on the/ collusion change levelled by the| ORT, which has 10,000 mem-| bers. | Remaining in the background) of the inter-union fight was the perennial friction between the CBRT, a Canadian union, and the other railway unions, all of which, including the ORT, are international organizations, W. T. Wilson, CNR vice-pres- ident of 'labor relations, said the charge had "'no basis in fact." Mr, Hutchinson called on the! CLC executive to order the IBRT to withdraw as bargain- ing agent for the 600 workers involved in the dispute.
