Glee Club Places Top In Festival By MRS. KEN GAMSBY ORONO -- A happy group of children retumed to Orono re- cently having placed first in competition at the Peterborough Kiwanis Music Festival. The group was the Glee Club of the Orono Public School and this was their first effort in the Festival for a number of years. The Orono group competed with eight other schools in the Village School Chorus section of three-part harmony. The local Glee Club gained first place with a total of 85 points out of a possible 100. The sec- ond place school had 84 points, The Orono Glee Club sang "The Pearly Adriatic," a folk song. This number, stated the adjudicator, wes most difficult but he felt the group had caught the various moods of the song. The club consists. of 30 young boys and are directed by Mrs. R. D. Morton. Miss Alldred ac- companied them on the piano. Mrs. M. Lunn accompanied the group to Peterborough on Wed- nesday. A certificate has been pre- sented to the Glee Club and at a later date they will receive a cup which they will hold for a year. The Orono Rink was the scene of a Pee Wee Hockey Tourna- ment recently when boys of six teams competed. The boys ranged in age from 10 to 12 years. The Millbrook Pee Wees were the top winners of the 'ourna- ment blanketing the three teams they met in the tourna- ment. The Orono Pee Wees were the consolation winners as they won two of their three games, ; The Millbrook team was head- ed by their strong defenceman Gordon Van Dam who topped his club and all other players in the other teams in the scoring division. The tournament opened at nine in the morning with Mill- brook first meeting the Orono Pee Wees. This game was a victory for Millbrook with a score of 5-0. "This defeat to Orono sent them to the consola- tion series and the Millbrook team into the championship series of the tournament. The second game of the day was between Keene and Grafton with the vicory going o Keene 4-1, The final game of the first round of the tournament was played between Pontypool and the Bowmanville Barons. The Barons were the top team in this game and took a 5-0 vic- tory. The fourth game of the day was the first of the consolation round in which Orono defeated! Grafton by a score of 4-2. Orono goals were by Eric Duvall 2, amd Steven West 2. This eliminated Grafton from any further play and placed| Orono in the finals for the Consolation Championship. The fifth game of the day was in the Championship. round in which Millbrook eliminated Keene in a close battle by a score of 2-0. This victory sent the Mill- brook team to the champion- ship finals to be played in the seventh game of the day. The final series of the Con- solation round was played as the sixth game between Pontypool and Orono, This was a 3-0 victory for Orono with Steven West net- ting the three Orono goals. Orono thus won the Consolation Championship and was present- ed with the trophy for this achievement by Jack Moffat on behalf of the Orono Chamber of Commerce, The Championship of the Tournament was decided in the seventh game when Mill- brook took a 6-0 from Bowman- ville Barons. The Millbrook team was pre- sented with the Championship Trophy by Les. Aslett, presi- dent of the Orono Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber pro- vided funds for the trophies which were presented to the winning teams. During the noon hour ladies of the village and of the Orono Hockey players served lunch in the basement of the Orono United Crurch. In all it is ex- pected that the Orono Athletic Association may clear close to one hundred dollars on the day In Asia Discussed By OLGA HILL BLACKSTOCK -- About 30 members of Cartwright Town and Country Club met recently. The most important part of the evening's program was a film called "On the Rim of Tomor- row" which showed the young people of Asia struggling to live as Christians in the changing modern world of the South- East Asian countries. In the discussion period after the film, it was found that Can- ada and Western countries share some of the problems of the Asian churches, and ques- tions were raised concerning) the responsibility of Canada and the Church to the people, particularily the young people, of South-East .
