DYMOND, MD Health Minister for Ontario Through The Ontario Cancer dation a multitude of services are available to cancer patients in the Province. To carry out its program the Foundation re- ceives its income from Provin- cial and Federal cancer control grants, as well as donations from various sources including the Ontario Division of the Ca- nadian .Cancer Society, whose} annual campaign for funds is) currently in progress. One of the services available is a free biopsy service. If a person has, or is thought to have cancer, his physician may send a specimen of the suspect- ed tissue to a pathologist. The report will be sent back to the doctor at no charge to him or his patient, as the Cancer Foun- dation will pay the pathologist's fee, Several thousand cases of cancer are diagnosed through this biopsy service every year, and it has proved a great help to practising physicians and sur- introduced | | service, sion of certain drugs at no cost, to needy cancer patients. This service is for patients at| home, under the care of their own doctor, who need this spe- cial assistance. The doctor re- quisitions the drugs from the Foundation and the prescrip- tions are filled by dispensaries of the Princess Margaret Hospi-| tal or at certain of the hospitals| where Foundation clinics are) 6 work. located. Ontario Cancer Group Aids Many . 'THE OSHAWA TIMES, Fridey, April 19, 1963 Two rehabilitation services are available. These are for patients from all over Ontario at the Princess Margaret Lodge, at no charge. One is a speech therapy centre. If a patient has lost his larynx due to cancer surgery, he must learn another special way of talking, known as oesophageal speech, If he cannot learn to speak he will be provided with an electro- larynx through the generosity of the Cancer Society, The second rehabilitation service has to do with the pro- vision of moulded replacements for facial disfigurements resuit- ing from radical cancer sur- gery. This service is in the hands of a very skilled crafts- man and is entirely free to any who may require it. Every year a great deal of money is spent on cancer re- search for the discovery of bet- ter treatment and cure. But much can already be done for cancer patients, and with the facilities available in Ontario many cures can be accomplish- ed, particularly when the dis- ease has been detected in its early. stages. Without The Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foun- dation many diagnostic and) treatment facilities would not be available to cancer patients in the Province, except at great expense. This is one more ex- ample of how the Government of Ontario provides badly need- ed health services and makes them available to the people of this Province.
