@ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, Aprn ze, 1vee 563 Children Inspected By Public Health Unit COBOURG -- The following is the March report for North- umberland-Durham Counties, as released by Dr. C. M. Horner, Medical Officer of Health. COMMUNICABLE DISEASE During the month 150 cases were reported. Of these 76 were chickenpox, 48 mumps, and 36 red measles. 'Two rabid. animals were re- ported, a fox in Manvers Town- ship and a dog in Campbellford. Three persons received rabies vaccine because of contact. TUBERCULOSIS School children in Durham County were given Heaf tests in the latter part of March by a team from the Tuberculosis Prevention Branch of Ontario Department of Health, the pre- liminary organizing having been done by the Northumberland- Durham Tuberculosis and Health Association. This is preparatory to a mass survey to be held in Durham County in June and July. Children 10 years of age or under found to have a positive reaction to the test and their immediate contacts are being given appointments at regular Health Unit and special clinics. |All positive children over 10 will jalso be x-rayed at these clinics, \their contacts however, will be examined at the time of the Dismiss Charge Against Ajax Woman Driver AJAX (Staff) -- A charge of careless driving laid against an Ajax woman, Mrs, Ethel Epps of 171 Admiral road was dis- missed in Ajax Magistrates' Court, Thursday. Constable Eric Place of the Ajax Police Department told the court he investigated a motor vehicle accident, March 13 on Bayly street at the Ajax High School. He stated no point of impact could be found at the scene be- cause of fresh snow. Douglas Ferguson, the driver of the second car, said he was preparing to turn into the high school parking lot from the west bound lane, The blinkers were on for some distance and when proceeding to make the turn a car came up behind in the left lane and graz- ed the car, he said. Mrs. Epps, said she was fol- lowing the car driven by Fur- guson and when. passing him noticed the turn signals out of the corner of her eye. ROYA Magistrate C. W. MEAT INSPECTION During the month, 859 ani- mals were inspected, bringing the total for the first quarter of the year to 2706 animals seen by a veterinarian. In Marc 12 animals were condemned, and 24 portions. The staff of the Health Unit attended a one-day course on Emergency Measures Organiza- tion at the central office in Co- bourg on Mar. 27, This course was arranged by the Emergency general survey. The Public Health Nurse visit- ed the families of these children to arrange for the x-ray as part of the continuing program to find cases and contacts of tu- berculosis. IMMUNIZATION The winter series of immuni- zation clinics for children in grades 2, 5, and 8 and 11 in urban centres was completed. Many children could not be given primary vaccinations he- cause of the presence of com- municable diseases in the schools, This is one reason why children should receive' their primary vaccination prior to one year of age. SCHOOL HEALTH During March, 563 children were given complete health inspection by the Public Health Nurse. Vision tests were given to 790 children.
