* SE ee ee ee eee Wes id 'THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thuredey, Mey 9, 1903 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts 'Willie 'Dodgers To Big Win | By BOB GREEN |Associated Press Sports Writer | ems EDMONTON OIL KINGS could win the Memorial Cup tonight -- if they hand Niagara Falls Flyers their fourth defeat of the Canadian finals set -- and if they do -- they'll blow the lid off every oil well in Edmonton -- because they've had teams in the finals six times, each of the last three years for half of the record -- and they've never managed . to win the bundle. 'Back in 1939 -- Edmonton Roamers (Re- member Elmer Kreller?) lost out to Oshawa Generals at Maple Leaf Gardens -- that was the year of the heated arena and the time Oshawa fans threw out their winter underwear at the Gardens -- instead of putting it away in moth-balls. Niagara Falls won the first game of this current. Dominion final series, 8-0, but since then, the Oil Kings have taken three-straight. Their scores have been 7-3, 5-2 and 3-2, which would indicate that perhaps Niagara Falls can win tonight and extend the series. Loss of a top forward star, Gary Dornhoefer, who suffered a broken leg in the third game, has been a serious blow to "Hap" Emms' crew. Emms has been playing under a blanket protest that the Edmonton ice surface is improperly marked out -- but this, of course, is just a gesture. As a matter of fact, we're surprised that Emms hasn't had more ink in the past week than he has been given. Old "Hap" must be getting mellow -- because this series has been set up for Edmonton's advantage, right from the very start and one would just have to be plain dumb not to recognize this fact. CALGARY Stampeders, at a meeting last night, unani- mously agreed that they should pull out of the Western Hockey League, due to various circumstances, not the least of which has been a marked lack of support from their parent club, the Chicago Black Hawks. Calgary hockey men agree that Chicago hasn't shown any interest in the Stampe- ders and so, they're going to ask for a year's leave of ab- sence -- which could run into several seasons. The real nut of the situation is that Calgary sits in the heart of the Wes- tern Hockey League and if they pull out -- the gap will be serious to all other ciubs in the The club reports a loss of $90,000. for this past season's operation and as they are also not a young club -- their future prospeats are not bright, so this step-out is logical as well as economical. x x x x OSHAWA City and District Softball Association held what may well prove a key meeting in local softball history, last night at Oshawa Children's Arena. After more than 15 years of successful operation, the South Ontario County Softball League is in danger of extinction. Mount Zion, with a Brooklin sponsor, has made entry to the Oshawa setup and has been accepted. Pickering has folded and Brooklin, long the mainstay of the South Ontario circuit, has been hit with old age and retirement, while Markham has pulled out, to play their ball in a '"'North Toronto" circuit. This leaves Port Perry, with a good club, new park, etc., all pepped up to play -- and no place to play. Oshawa City and District officers are going to make an all-out effort to provide a "District'"' League and with this in mind -- they have set their closing deadline for entries -- that means paid-up emtries, backed with an entry fee -- for Wednesday, May 15. It is hoped that Whitby will come up with a team, along with a good Juvenile team from Oshawa, perhaps an Indus- trial Intermediate team and also a good Junior team -- and these three clubs -- if they materialize -- could join with Port Perry for a good four-team District League -- and besides having their own schedule, would play interlocking single schedule games with the Oshawa "Major League' teams -- now recognized as Scugog Cleaners, Bad Boy's (formerly Pic-O-Mats); Heffering's, McLeans and Mount Zion. As it sits now -- it's strictly up to Whitby and to the local boys who want to play OASA Juvenile ball this sum- mer. They've got to organize and have their entry in by next Wednesday night. The word is out -- Get Cracking! circuit. Twice Shy paid $7.00. Los Angeles Dodgers had been waiting all season for that Davis fellow to start hitting. |Well, he got started all right, \but it was the other Davis. - One of Dodgers' big concerns this season has been the hitting slump of Tommy Davis, who led the National League with a 346 average and 1653 runs batted in last season. He's been hampered by leg injuries and is hitting only .227. But Willie Davis, sometimes called the other Davis, sud- denly has taken up the slack In the last four games, Willie's had seven hits in 15 times at bat, including two doubles, two homers and a triple and has driven in five runs. | It's no coincidence that Dodg- ers have won three of the four, including an 11-5 decision over St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday night.
