(CP)--| A new field is being explored in the national program for re- training men without jobs or lis. In the woods of northwestern Ontario 27 men are being trained as guides for tourists. The course, being carried out under the Canadian Vocational Training Act, is part of a training and retraining pro- gram for 400 unemployed spon- sored by the Port Arthur Board of education. At the Quetico Conference and Training Centre near Ati- kokan, Ont., 110 miles west of the Lakehead, the 27 men are taking a tough one - month course, working 10 hours a day six days a week. Some are ex- perienced guides trying to up- grade their skills, some are Indians accustomed to life in the woods, others are com- pletely new to guiding. The men, including two from as far away as the Sault Ste. Marie area, range in age from 17 to 55 and in education from Grades 4 to 11. Some were skilled in occupations that prac- tically have ceased to exist. Others were completely without skills. ' The men are taught where to find fish and game. They learn bush first aid and how to make emergency repairs of equip- ment, When they are through they will know how to use a map and compass and tell di- rection by the sin and stars, And they will know how to organize search and rescue parties. LEARN TO COOK The guide wil be able to set up a safe camp and cook ful- course meals over an open fire. He 'will be expected to make sure all fish and game laws are obeyed and in some cases will be required to show tour- ists how to prepare, cook and preserve their game. The course also trains a guide how to live off the land.
