No--with pheasant under his belt and the good wishes of his bizarre fan club echo- ing in his ears. The tall, bespectacled San Francisco Giant is going to Tacoma. "You'll come back, John," gays his fan club of more than But just in case he doesn't, he's still become probably the least expensive and most obscure pitcher to ever have a booster group. Novella O'Hara, a San Francisco secretary who cre- ated the John Pregenzer Fan Club, otherwise known as the John Who? Fan Club, pre- sided at Thursday night's go- ing away banquet after base- ball commissioner Ford Frick forced John's departure. John had to leave because Frick said the Giants couldn't option injured Chick Hiller to Tacoma. Hiller had to come back and somebody had to go. MAYOR MOURNS John and his wife, Rhoda, read a telegram of condolence from San Francisco Mayor George Christopher be- fore eating their pheasant un- der glass at the Blue Fox res- taurant. The 27-year-old right-hander reviewed the roster of the fan club's navy--the crew of the Italian freighter Italterra, all club members in good stand- ing. He laughed at how the club began this spring when Miss O'Hara learned the Giants had purchased Pregenzer for $100, "Imagine getting a whole Giant for a season for $100," she exclaimed, and promptly went about collecting $110. But the Giants wouldn't sell. From that joke beginning, the club grew to membership including such diverse figures as National Football League commissioner Pete Rozelle and Helen Gurley Brown, author of Sex and The Single Girl, The fan club will continue, vowed Miss O'Hara, its ob- jective unshaken: 'To make the world a better place for John Pregenzer to pitch in." =|\Czech Tennis Star "Still Holding Own ROME (AP)--With a stout heart and a shrewd mind, Jaro- slav Drobny is still playing win- ning tennis. He sees no reason why he shouldn't, After all, he says, the am- -jateurs of his better days "were far better than the present ones," What he spots to the present amateurs in age, he gets back in court cunning and uncanny accuracy. But age has taken Its toll, His strong legs, which. once made him a great hockey player, can not stand up to the pace. The 41-year-old Czech - born star won three straight matches during the Italian international is Walter Bond Will Keep On Playing CLEVELAND (AP) -- Walter Bond, outfielder for Jacksonville Suns of the International League will continue playing baseball while doctors evaluate his blood ailment, Cleveland Indians, the Suns' parent club, announced Friday. Bond was examined in a Jack- sonville hospital Thursday night. The Cleveland club issued this statement: "Walter Bond has been treated for a blood dyscrasia for some time. Very recently his blood picture suddenly changed but it was determined that this was probably due to his regular medication. "A change in therapy has been instituted and it is hoped that two or three weeks will see Bond return to normal health, "Because of his desire to play and his sense of well being, it was determined that playing ball during his period of adjust- ment would not be curtailed in any way. Further evaluation will be made in two weeks.' Then his legs gave out and he bowed be- fore 24-year-old Boro Jovanovic of Yugoslavia. Drobny played his matches carefully, sever wasting a mo- tion. He aimed his volleys and drives carefully, trying to make his opponents run from one side of the court to another. He -- the net only for a sure "I 'cannot compete with the youngsters physically," he said in an interview. "But I can teach them a few tricks."' *Ten years ago Drobny was considered one of the world's greatest amateurs. He won the Wimbledon tournament in 1954. Since then, he says, the qual- ity of the amateur tennis field has dropped considerably. HAVE REASON "But there is a valid reason for this," he said. WEST OLD COUNTRY SOCCER Money -- Spending Spree Pays Off Fo By M. McINTYRE HOOD Special London, England Correspondent to The Oshawa Times LONDON Everton's big splurge of money-spending to buy top-ranking players has at last paid its dividend. After three years of team-building, at a cost of over $750,000, Ever- ton are English League cham- pions, and will represent Eng- jand in next year's European Cup competition. They made sure of the title by winning 41 from Fulham, although they did not need to win to be champions. Relega- tion - threatened Manchester; City, putting up a fight tinged with desperation, defeated Ev- erton's rivals, Tottenham, 1-0. And at the same as, the ay other r Everton The second division champion- ship is in a snarl. Stoke took a firm hold on first place by beating Chelsea 1-0, and Sun- derland went into second place with a 43 win at Swansea. Stoke, with three games to play, have 51 points; Sunder- land, with two to play, have 48 points. Chelsea's next game is with Sunderland, on the lat- ter's ground, and this may well decide which of these two teams accompanies Stoke into the first division. NORTHAMPTON CHAMPS Northampton are champions of the third division and move up. Swindon will probably be the other team to be promoted, although Coventry and Port Vale have a mathematical h of catching them. Peter- City, =. down 2-0 J Bolton Wan- dere Bverten finished with 61 points, having won 25 games, G@rawn 11 and lost only six dur- ing the season. They have not been beaten at home for 18 months. The last time Everton won the championship was in the season of 1938-1939. This is the sixth champion. ship for Everton, Only Arsenal, with seven championships has bettered this record, and Aston Villa and Sunderland have equalled it. They are worthy champions, having shown much greater consistency than their rivals, Tottenham. And_inci- dentally, at the beginning of the season I picked Everton as the borough went out of the race by losing 4-0 to Northampton. Brentford are assured of the) fourth division championship, and Oldham will also go up to third division. But Crewe, Gil- lingham and Mansfield, each with three games to play, are all in with a chance to nose out Torquay and provide the other two teams to be promoted. UP IN SCOTLAND Interest in the first division championship in Scotland is over, with Rangers well in the clear to win the flag. Kilmar- nock have a one-point lead over Partick Thistle for second place. Hibernians are putting up a great fight against rele- gation, and came level with team most likely to beat Spurs for the title. : 54 CHURCH ST. Clyde by beating &t. Mirren.
