Golf is a sport where you're destined to remain a duffer un- til you learn to keep your head down, Andy Bathgate has learned these lessons so well that, aside from being a_ professional) hockey player of consummate skill, he's a good enough golfer to be taken on as assistant pro at a posh Toronto course. And his talents don't end there. Blessed with the gift of ab, he has been hired by the dian Broadcasting Corpor- ation as a sports commentator on a 24-hour Saturday after- Generals Ready For Metro Again TORONTO (CP)--Four teams indicated Tuesday night that they will operate again next season in the Metro Toronto Junior A division of the Ontario Hockey Association, but two others were question marks. Brampton, Oshawa, Whitby and Knob Hill agreed at an OHA-sponsored meeting to re- turn to the loop, although Knob Hill will likely move to Mark- ham. Theré y was no commit- ment from Toronto Marlboros or Neil McNeil Maroons, both farm clubs of Toronto Maple Leafs, which founded the league. There have been reports that the two teams would switch to the provincial Junior A group, but Buck Houle, director of amateur personnel for the Ma- ple Leafs, declined to confirm or deny it. When Wren Balir, director of personnel for Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and general manager of the Oshawa entry, warned Houle that players from either Marl- boros or Neil McNeil would be subject to a general waiver if either team left the Metro loop, House replied: "I assure you, you won't get @ crack at Neil McNeil play. ers." DENIES SUGGESTION House denied Blair's sugges- tion that the Leafs plan to pack a_ team of the best players from Marlboros and Neil McNeil into the provincial group. The Metro League constitution re- quires players of a team that folds to be divided among the other teams or waived by all other Metro clubs. The Maple Leaf management was given until June 20--after the NHL's annual meeting, when details of professional sponsorship will have been set- tled--to determine whether its) two teams will enter the metro) league. Rangers' hockey star figures on contin- uing his golf career, rather noon national network radio show. Andy also has an unerring sense of direction. It's evident in the fact that during nine full seasons with New York Rang- ers of the National Hockey League he has missed the 20- goal mark only once. It's also obvious from the fact that on the golf course he has become no worse than a one- handicap player and has a cou- ple of 65 rounds to his credit. CLOSE TO $30,000 He never gets lost on the way to the bank but perhaps that's not a tribute to his sense of di- rection. He makes the trip so regularly he should be able to get there with his eyes closed. For, with hockey, golf and ra- dio, Bathgate figures to earn about $30,000 this year, and he estimates that he's got at least four more seasons of hockey in his gimpy knees, Andy developed an interest in golf in Winnipeg where he was born a little more than 30 years ago. "I was raised near a_ golf course and did a lot of caddy- ing, but I didn't become ser- jious about the game until six jyears ago." ; In Vancouver, where the Bathgates and their 17-month- old daughter have lived during the off-season in recent years, he won the city amateur tourna- ment in 1960 and was low ama- teur in last year's British Co- lumbia open. Several months ago he came to terms with Toronto's North wood Golf Club where he hopes to concentrate on teaching, also taking part in three or four tournaments this year, With a new addition to the Bathgate family due in Septem- ber, it's perhaps understandable when Andy begins to talk of se- curity. Explaining why he thinks golf is more secure than hockey coaching, he says: "T feel you can last so much longer playing golf if you han- dle yourself properly, I think I can play golf until I'm 50 or 60. Hockey coaching is a produce- or-else type of business. "There's not as much pres- sure in golf as there is in coaching. Besides, golf allows for more of a family life and I'd like to settle down in one spot after I'm through as an active hockey player." Other athletes have tried to compete in two sports, often un- Lullwater Frost Wins At Mohawk CAMPBELLVILLE, Ont. Fortunately, the braces he must wear for hockey to keep his knee caps in place aren't needed for golf. Bathgate made his debut as a sports announcer on a pro- gram called Saturday Sports Date May 4. The show covers sporting events and intersperses scores and chatter between re- corded music. Andy was _ understandably neryous during the early part of his first show, in which he shared the announcing work with Al Hamel. "Just a little time and he'll do all right," said producer Bob McLaughlin, "Once he gets used to this he'll be doing more and more of the talking." Andy intends to be well pre pared. 'From now on I'll keep up on sports events by reading the papers," he said after his first show. The same ding-dong pace was maintained in the second stanza with Italia taking a 2-0 lead on DiDanielli's goal, at the 12-min- ute mark. Polonia came back strongly and Stan Powlass scored to cut the deficit in half.
