H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' sj ' LAST NIGHT'S big annual banquet and pre- sentation of trophies, for the Oshawa Minor Hockey Association, should have been recorded on film. It was the biggest "minor hockey do" ever held in this eity -- a far cry from the modest but equally sincere affairs that were staged back in the early 30's. They had over 200 on hand last night, including the Police Assoc, Ontario hockey champs from Oshawa; coaches, managers, referees, executives, sponsors, players, etc. etc. It was a heart-warming event and ene that should have been recorded by the Oshawa Civie Auditorium committee -- it would have made excellent publicity material for the big campaign seheduled to open this Saturday. It was a great thrill to see dozens and dozens of hockey-minded youngsters on hand to receive their championship crests, individual trophies, etc. And guest speaker of the evening was an Oshawa homebrew, Eddie Westfall, who graduated from the Oshawa Minor Hockey Association through the Barrie Flyers and Niagara Falls Juniors, to make his mark in the Na- tional Hockey League, with the Boston Bruins. In a sincere and down-to-earth: address, Eddie made an excellent example for every young Oshawa 'City League" pucksters -- proof of the opportunity that is available for every boy privileged to play minor hockey in this city, under the excellent, efficient operation provided by a group of hard-working in- dividuals, We could write a coupe of long columns on the time and effort contributed by these men. Almost all of them are former Oshawa "City League" players, who as boys were given an opportunity to play organized hockey in this city, and now as adult citizens, are "paying, back" with a splendid contribu- tion of honest effort and unselfish hard work. Chaps like president Cliff Maddock, past-president Bill Kurelo, past-president Harold Hudson, Bill Atkinson, the efficient secretary-treasurer of the organization, "Dutchy" Turner, Tom Cotie, Bob Heard, Ivan Locke and his public-spirited staff of referees, the execu- tive committee members, advisory board, and all the sponsors, managers, coaches, stick-boys, etc., to- gether they make" a great team" and an organiza- tion, which for years, has kept Oshawa's status in Minor Hockey at the level, second-to-none, in the province or Dominion. They're not only each and every one doing a great job -- together they're the best -- Oshawa parents, citizens, sports fans, every- body, owe them a real vote of thanks. We gladly make the motion -- every sports fan and public- irited citizen in Oshawa gets a chance to "second the motion" when the Civie Auditorium drive gets under way this week-end! * * * OSHAWA City & District Softball Association was rained out on Tuesday night. Last night, the Oshawa Tony's opened their Beaches League sche- dule here but the bitter cold weather kept the crowd to a new low. Tonight, the City & District Major League will try again, with an opening doubleheader at Alexandra Park, a game in Port Perry and another at Bathe Park, this latter tilt a twilight tilt with Brooklin Concrete visiting Genosha Aces. At Alexan- dra Park, it's Scugog Cleaners and Bad Boys, at 6:30 o'clock, with McLean's and Heffering's meeting in the night-cap. It looks like another great softball season in this city and tonight's twin-bill should provide a flying start.' bers, press, radio, etc. llice Assoc, championship team; er" in the entire Association. the referees who gave unselfish) One of the eyening's high- seryice, at no charge, through-/jights }borhood Assoc.
