OSHAWA YACHTERS CROSS STARTING LINE FOR SEASON'S FIRST RACE Oshawa Yacht Club Launches '63 Season Many Oshawa yachtsmen worked diligently with sand- paper and paint brush this past winter to insure that their 'boats would be ready for the water last Saturday. The members of the Oshawa Yacht Club made every effort to have as many boats as pos- sible launched for the 1963 sea- son in time to participate in the "Opening Day' ceremonies, held May 18. In' spite of the inclement weather, the sailing enthusiasts flocked to the OYC boat storage area to make the last minute ad- justments to their boats. The smaller centre board boats were rigged methodically on the wharf and then slid down a launching ramp into the water, while. at the same time the heavier keel boats, anchored in the basin, wede being prepared. A strong wind from the west whipped the cold waters of Lake Ontario into a chop as the boats made their way out of the har- bor for the "'sail past". William Smith's Falcon class boat was used as the flagship. Donald Morgan, Commodore of the OYC, acknwledged the salute of each boat as they sailed by in turn. Following the '"'sail past" many of the boats were raced around a standard triangular course. A heavy swell had de- veloped by this time and com- bined with the strong wind made the windward laps of the course exciting but at the same time uncomfortable. Waterproof top clothing was in order and some wiser members even wore gloves to protect themselves from the chilly spray being blown across the decks, Results of the race was as follows: Blue Jay Class (position, skip- per and crew): 1. D. Hercia and J. Moffatt; 2. H. Kirby and D. The suggested amendments are subject to final approval of e@ppropriate committees of the two bodies. Any final action cannot be taken until late Sep- tember, Changes would not be effective until next Jan. 1. The joint proposals are of a minor nature, dealing with play alty in stroke play for striking a fellow competitor's ball from the putting green or within 20 yards of the hole to include play from a hazard. There is no penalty at present from a hazard. The negotiating committee Kirby; 8. K. Cunliffe and P. Cunliffe; 4. J. Pascoe and "Joe" Bush; 5. C. Burrill and E. Cheetham; 6. N. Lawrence and P. Carswell; 7, N. Wilder and P. Woosteri; 8. J. Patterson and T. Howe. Later in the evening, mem- bers of the Oshawa Yacht Club and their friends enjoyed a dance at the clubhouse. On Sunday, May 19, racing started in earnest for the Blue- jay Class sloops. The first two races, in a total-point series, were run in the harbor area due to the high winds which had prevailed from the previous| day. Results of these races were as follows: Blue Jay Class -- First Race: 1. D. Hercia and J. Moffatt; 2. J. Patterson and R. Backwell; 3. .C. Burrill and M. Hartley; 4, H. Kirby and D. Kirby; 5.
