Sailing Yacht 'Vim' Gets Overhaul Job By HAROLD TILLEY Canadian Press Correspondent SYDNEY, Australia (CP)-- When Vim, the American-owned trial horse for the Austrai- jan America's Cup challenger Gretel, again hits the water she will have had her bottom tizzied up. The prospect of a bill for any- thing up to $15,000 would indi- cate the Australian syndicate that has the 12-metre veteran on charter must have found she had deteriorated a good deal be- low the belt during her quarter- century of deep water yachting. But just any old patching job is not good enough for Vim. Whatever is replaced or re- paired while she is on the slips where Gretel was built last year must be in accord precisely with specifications to which Vim was built in 1938 To ensure this. is so, the work is being done in the yards of Lars Halvorsen near Sydney,| under the supervision of naval/ architect Alan Payne, who de-| signed and looked after the building of Gretel. | CLOSE CHECK | An additional check on the) work is given by supervisors of Lloyd's Shipping Register and they will assure themselves that the repaired Vim conforms in every detail to her original specifications before they issue their certificate To get at Vim's skeleton, builders had to strip off 18 tons of lead fastened to her keel Taking in of water and other minor breaches of behavior in a craft of her breeding roused Suspicions about Vim last year Payne said here it now is clear Vim was sailing on bor- rowed time in trials with Gretel before the America's Cup chal- lenge race off Rhode Island last Seytember. In the challenge tace, the yacht Weatherley re- tained the America's Cup for the United States Vim has been around since she was designed by Olin Step. hens and built in 1938. The U.S millionaire sportsman H. § Vanderbilt raced her in English waters a year after she was built. During the war she was locked away and after the war became a luxury cruising yacht. Columbia just beat her in trials for defender against the Engilsh challenge for the America's Cup in 1958. Since 1960 she has been in Australia and was used in trials SPORTS BRIEFS | SENT TO BUFFALO NEW YORK (AP) --Larry Burright, the young second baseman acquired from Los Angeles Dodgers last winter, was optioned by New York Mets Monday to their Buffalo farm club in the International League, BEATTY WILL RUN LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Jim Beatty said Monday he will compete against New Zealand's Peter Snell in Friday night's Compton Relays.
