Garrett said he had received about $2,400 in his father's will and saved another $900 when he met a man in a Liverpool sea- man's club. The man called himself was a Canadian sailor, and talked Garrett into agreeing to pool their money to buy a small business in Canada. Garrett said he gave Taylor about $2,100 and agreed to meet the man at a Toronto YMCA. Garrett arrived here and waited three days at the YMCA before telling a clerk there about his predicament. A jani- tor stood nearby, listening. Before Garrett complained to police, he received a telephone call from a man who. called himself Keith Taylor, and said he was phoning from Montreal. Taylor described himself as a cousin of Thomas Taylor and ar- ranged to meet Garrett in front of downtown Union Station. FEIGNS CALLS The men anet and went to a phone booth, where Taylor os- tensibly asked an automobile agency about buying a car. Taylor said into the phone that he had a $1,100 cheque and was ready to pick up the car. When the conversation indi- cated that the car dealer wouldn't accept a cheque, Gar- rett volunteered to lend Taylor $800 he had on him, While Tay- lor went off to get the car with the "borrowed" money, Garrett was dispatched to pick up Tay- lor's luggage at the station. There was no luggage, Gar- rett testified, and he waited 2% hours outside the station in freezing temperatures for Tay- lor to return, A porter finally called police.
