sealant Rape magn § THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, June 20, 1963 Goodyear Plans $1 Million Plant BOWMANVILLE (Staff) -- Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. confirmed Wednesday that they will build a $1,300,000 reclaim plant in Bowmanville. Plant Manager H. G. Mac. Neill announced that the plant, under consideration for some time, will definitely be located in Bowmanville. Plans call for the new division to be erected on the --. property in an area south-west of the present factory. The building will contain more than 30,000 square feet of floor space. "The plant is being built in two phases," said Mr. MacNeill, who is also a member of Bow- manville's Industrial Com. mittee. "Completion of the first phase will produce a total of ten mil- lion pounds of reclaim a year, and will employ approximately 25 people." Mr. MacNeill said that the second phase of operation will include extra equipment and boost production to around 20 million pounds per year. "At that time, about 40 peo- ple will be employed," he said. Although no official date has been set for the start of con- struction, Mr. MacNeill stated that he expected the first sod will be turned within the next four to six weeks, The construction of the plant will be such that space will be provided for the extra equip- ment needed for the second phase, This expenditure will be made when it is warranted by the demand for this material,| Mr. MacNeill said. The reclaim making process} will be the most up to date) available, and is known in the) industry as the "Reclaimator Process". In this process, scrap tires} ate ground into a fine powder,| and the waste fabric and wire is mechanically separated from the particles of rubber. At this) point the rubber is mixed with) an oi] and then fed into a re- claimator machine. | year was contemplating an addi. tion to their present facilities was given at a luncheon some weeks ago when L. E. Spencer, President of Goodyear Canada spoke to local officials including Mayor Ivan Hobbs, Alex. Car. ruthers, Member of Provincial Parliament, Russell Honey, Federal Member of Parliament, and members of the Industrial Commission. Accompanying Mr. Spencer to Bowmanville were A. W. Denny, Vice-President in Charge of Pro- duction, Goodyear Canada, and other members of Goodyear's top management. In charge of this new opera- tion will be Leo Huhta who is being transferred here from the New Toronto plant, Mr. Huhta, a graduate Chem- * ical Engineer from the Univer- sity of Toronto, started tn the New Toronto Production Squad- ron. He has held important as- signments in the Development and Production Organizations for that plant. He is married with two children and will be moving to Bowmanville shortly. Mr. MacNeill paid tribute to Mayor Ivan Hobbs and Town Officials for their co-operation during the initial planning stages of this project and for their efforts in helping to make this expansion a reality. This is the first expansion that Goodyear have made in Bowmanville since 1958 when the new Belt Department was completed. The plant presently employs approximately 600 peopie and has enjoyed very steady produc- |tion through the years. Mr. MacNeill stated that it is up to everyone connected with the Goodyear Bowmanville operations, both Management and labor, to make this new operation as successful as pos- sible, If it is successful then the second phase of this plant will become a reality and Manage- ment will be encouraged to look Ito Bowmanville for additional Jexpansion in existing products | and Legend Aer rg "The additions that Manage-| This is a specially construct-/ ment have made in the past)~-- 9 PI AAD re i2e9/ IL TOWN OFFICIALS, and Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. men recently toured a re- claim plant in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
