Buddhists Act In Campaign For Equality SAIGON, (AP) -- From a} peaceful monotony of temple| bells, incense smoke and medi- tation, a new force has emerged in South Viet Nam -- a force that cam drive a man to burn! himself to death in the fervor jof his befef. | For the last month, yellow- jrobed Buddhist monks have | moved and acted with the deter- | mination and precision of sol-| diers, Never before have they | shown such zeal in their non-| violent "campaign for religious | equality and social justice." 'We are all Buddhists and we must work together," one) said. | Saigon monks, formerly for- | bidden to touch money, now) carry small change to get around in buses and taxis. Even, the monks' practise of begging | for rice and clothing from) house to house largely has died | ut. Buddhist protest activity | reached a climax June Ll, when Rev. Thich Quang Duc; a 72- year - old monk born im the) coastal town of Nha Trang, set) fire to his gasoline-soaked robes in a main street intersection, | j and burned to death. Suicide is jnew. to Vietnamese Buddhist whose faith pledges | leaders, $ ithem to non-violence. | | Buddhists consider they are | loppressed and discriminated | | against by the government of) | President Ngo Dinh Diem, a Roman Catholic. | A French colonial Jaw still in force gives Christian churches special legal rights, especially | those involving ownership of | property. Outsiders have expressed puz- | ziement by the strident new tone| of Vietnamese Buddhism, but Buddhist followers here and-in the country-side seem to have! taken it in stride. i CLEANERS ond LAUNDERERS OSHAWA ~ PORT HOPE WHITBY .
