HARRY (PUNCH) BROADBENT Former Hockey Great Says Only Pay Better By STUART LAKE OTTAWA (CP) Former hockey great Harry (Punch) Broadbent has no regrets that his playing career ended in the late 1920s, "The only thing better about the game today is the pay," he says of the numerous rule changes since he was an active forward, Broadbent, named to the hockey Hall of Fame last year and acclaimed as one of the greatest "little men" the game has ever seen, played 10 sea- sons in the NHL with Ottawa Senators, Montreal Maroons and New York Americans, He began his pro career in 1912 in the National Hockey Associa- on, the predecessor of the HL, About five feet seven inches -- tall, weighing 170 pounds, he was noted in that era for his apeed and trickery, and for his ability as a tenacious checker, He possessed a swift, accu: rate wrist shot that scored 118 oals in the NHL and 56 in the HA previously HAS HIS DOUBTS Broadbent is not an admirer of the slapshot as used by many of today's players "It may travel faster, but you can't be sure where," he eaid with a chuckle Now a 7l-year-old grand father, Broadbent lives with his wife in a spacious two-storey brick home in one of Ottawa's oldest residential sections, He retired, as representative of a distillery firm, five years ago He follows hockey on televi gion, but admits that he doesn't see many goals scored, He SPORTS CALENDAR TODAY WEDNESDAY LACROSSE Ontario Lacrosse Association Junior League Playoffs: Osh. awa Green Gaels vs Alderwood Terriers, at Alderwood (To. ronto), 8.30 .m.
