i 10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, August 28, 1963 CHILD GUIDANCE Some Children Create Chaos | jrules, Every Evening Before Bed By GARRY MYERS, PHD. Many parents of several chil- dren face a problem similar to the one told in the following letter from an Ohio mother: | "We have a son, 10, daugh- ter, 8, another son, 5, and a 'gon, 14 months, We are in our jawing when such occurs, as- 30s, have good health and rela- tively few financial worries. "We have a pleasant home. Still on most evenings the few hours between dinner and 'bed- time are chaotic, Perhaps you have suggestions which would ! "allow us to spend the hours sso that each child has some "thing that could be done col- lectively which would be en- joyed by all of us. "During good weather, this time is spent outdoors but on cold or wet days we have to stay in and chaos reigns. We don't choose to have the tele- vision used except for selected programs so that appliance doesn't solve our problems. "We all like to read but there is a limit to the length of time in which I can sit and read aloud." My reply in part: It would be wonderful if you could induce the two older chil- dren to take turns, during the early part of this period, at reading to the five-year-old, No| , doubt these older children have| homework but they should do some reading from other than their school books. INDOOR GAMES Then these older children, | when they. must be indoors at this period, might like to play) a variety of games, such| as checkers, Chinese checkers,| Flinch and various card games. Even the brother, five, might) join in some of them. Also, it} might be a good time for the} older children to make things for fun with tools, you and. Dad helping and stimulating them and supplying them with suf ficient equipment. It's hardly a period for hav- ing neighbor children in, ex- cept, perhaps, for playing non- running games, occasionally. During this period, you should forbid running games and roughouse indoors. Instead of sign the offender (or offenders) to sit unamused, doing nothing, where you can see him, for a definite period, say of 20 or 30 minutes, It's fine that you limit radio and TV programs. Work out a definite bedtime period for each child, the baby going to bed first, the five- year-old about half an hour later and the older ones much later, perhaps together, This plan will enable each older one to see that he is treated dif- ferently because of his age and you parents to give more at- tention to the children retiring later, COME IN EARLIER When the weather is good,| you have the problem, of} course, of having these children come into the house at a de- sirable time without your going out to corral them. As the days} grow much shorter, you will expect your children to make a bee-line for the house when the lights appear Aneus-GrayDon CARPET COMPANY 282 King W 728-9581 RUG CLEANING | During long warm evenings,|ties for making the evening|laughter at the evening meal you may wisely choose to have|meal a leisurely time for all, 'me. | the younger children come into] when the three older children: |the house earlier, Rather rigid)might engage in conversation strictly }make matters whole family.
