(AP)---A New York broker pleaded not guilty in U.S. District Court Monday to charges of fradu- lently promoting sales of a Ca- nadian mining company's stock. The not guilty plea came from Arthur I. Korn, head of a New York City brokerage firm. He and three other men were in- dicted by a federal grand jury in New Haven on July 2, 1962. The eight-page indictment was kept secret until last Aug. 6. Those indicted, in addition to) Korn, were John Christopher' Doyle of St. John's, Nfld., and New York City, chairman of the board of the company, Canadian Javelin, Limited; Robert Mau- rice Sherwood of Montreal and Geneva, Switzerland; and Mil- ton Berman of New York City. Doyle was ordered through his lawyer to appear Friday in U.S. District Court in Bridgeport, where Judge William H. Tim- bers will hear motions on the indictment. The 11-count indictment said Doyle and the other defendants issued publicity ieading inves- tors to expect "'highly profitable and early, almost immediate, successful commercial produc- tion, transporting and market- ing of millions of tons of valu- able iron ore, when in fact Ca- nadian Javelin, Ltd., was in no position to so produce, transport or market such ore." "As far as I'm concerned I think Quebec has too weak an economy to afford to separate and when we're strong enough we won't be interested any more," the premier said in a television interview. He appeared on the Pierre Berton Show, carried on CFTO Toronto, CJOH Ottawa and CFCF Montreal. The program is to be shown in Calgary and Moose Jaw, Sask., next week. Asked about his request to the federal government, an- nounced last spring, for an in- creased share for Quebec of revenues from income, corpora- tion and death taxes, the pre- mier said Quebec needs more autonomy '"'to develop along the characteristics of the majority of the provinces so that as a minority we can be @ greater asset in Canada." He said the federal govern- ment had "invaded the field of provincial jurisdiction for one reason or another and has taken the financial responsibility of each." If the federal govern- ment would not turn over more Answer For Separatism tax receipts to the provinres there would be a chance of double taxation in Quebec, he stated. Mr. Berton spoke of use of the word "nation" to describe Que- bec. Mr. Lesage said' the word had to be given its French con- notation -- 'nation Canadien Francaise," meaning all French - speaking people in Canada. French - Canadians were not thinking of Quebec as a separate nation. GIVES VIEWS Asked for his views on Con- federation, Mr, Lesage said: 'I don't believe it is possible to say at this point that Confed- eration has been a success and I wouldn't venture to say it has been a failure. I think we have not really lived the experience of Confederation." He said there had been a lack of understanding between the provinces but modern commu- nication methods were making Canadians aware of problems in areas outside their own.
