FIVE IN HAND -- HE Gordie Howe Starts His 18th Campaign, Near All-Time Mark TORONTO (CP) -- Twenty years have passed since a big 15-year-old kid from Floral, Sask., went to Winnipeg to at- tend his first hockey camp. Back home at Floral he had played every position and for five teams in one season. Now Gordie Howe was going to try his luck with New York Rang- ers. It would have been a better story if this gangling youth had been an overnight sensation. Instead, he got homesick Gordie, one of nine children, was just a country boy, He mever before had strayed far from Floral. Two years later, however, Gordie Howe was a pro hockey player at Omaha, and only 17 years. old. The next season he moved up to the National Hockey League with Detroit Red Wings--and he's still a fix- ture in that town. He's come a long way from Floral. STARTS 18TH SEASON When the Red Wings open their 1963-64 season Thursday night at home against Chicago Black Hawks, Howe will be starting his 18th campaign. And this should be the golden one-- the season in which he becomes the greatest scorer in the his- tory of the game. Perhaps the greatest right winger hockey has ever known, Howe goes into the season with 540 goals, four short of the rec- ord 544 scored by Maurice (Rocket) Richard during his career with Montreal Cana- diens. Now 35, Gordie's ambition is to play 20 seasons. Only one man, Dit Clapper of Boston Bru- MONTREAL (CP)--Clarence Campbell, a man seldom given to outbursts of effusivencss, says "by every known standard this has to be @ grand season" for the National Hockey League. But at the same time he says the six-team operation he has directed as president since 1946 still considers expansioi some- thing of an enigma at thi point. The 58 - year - old lawyer from Fleming, Sask., com- mented on the NHL's outlook in an interview. "Advance indications are, if anything, better than last year," he said, drawing a comparison! with the NHL's biggest season, _|when total attendance surged to 2,590,000 for the 210-game schedule. "The balance of competition dictates the gate. It has to be a good year when the show shapes up the way it does now. Our two bottom teams of last season (New York Rangers and Boston Bruins) have both 2EMFMBER WHEN ...? He said there has been an over-all improvement at the box office -- with one exception-- each season since 1954-55. But he shied away from a progno- sis on attendance figures. "We reached 90 per cent of our rated seating capacity at the six rinks last year. That's pretty much saturation. You just don't go higher than that. And when you're talking figures it's contingent on how the race goes and many other factors." Turning to expansion, the NHL president said the board met governors "realizes the league needs a broader geo- graphic base." "But we don't wan to destroy the structure by trying to make it bigger simply for the sake of size. We want good solid part- ners who can do what we are doing now." To expand, he said, the NHL would have to go to eight teams 'and there are just not two contiguous cities now equipped to produce the kind of hockey we have." He said the league is striv- ing, instead, to "improve con- ditions that produce an ultim- ate expansion on a solid level." 17 years ago tonight-in a 12-round bout at Montreal. Webb forced the fight throughout and for five rounds had the former champion hanging on grimly. SQUEAL. FOR TOURISTS FORT WILLIAM, Ont. But, the way big Gordie is go- ing he may play 25. And the scoring' records he leaves may never be equalled. Howe already has played mote games (1,120) than any- one before him. He has a rec- ord 672 assists and a record 1,212 points. Six times he has} been the NHL's most valuable} player. os WON 6TH TITLE Last season he won his sixth scoring title with 86 points, five more than runner-up Andy Bathgate of New York Rang- ers. He also shared the playoff scoring leadership with team- mate Norm Ullman, each with 11 points, And he hasn't slowed up. In 10 pre-season exhibition games this fall, Howe scored 14 goals. He hasn't been under 20 goals in the last 14 years and last season, his best in the ljast six, he scored 38.
