Trades LOS ANGELES (AP)--Hav- ing just won the National League pennant by six games and the World Series by four, Los Angeles Dodgers don't fig- ure to rival the New York Stock Exchange im trading volume this winter. "But we're not going to stand pat either," says general man- ager Buzzie Bavasi. Curiously, the first thing Ba- vasi wants to import is more pitching. The Dodger pitching -staff had an eamed-run average of 2.85, best in the mejor leagues this year -and the best in the National League in 19 years. But Bavasi would still like to come by another right-handed starting pitcher and another left-handed relief pitcher. "You can always use another pitcher," he said. "We have some in the organization, but they may be a little young." CHANGES EXPECTED "There's a good chance the Dodger roster will change this month, The first eight teams in the National League are putting four players each in a pool set up to help the indigent New York Mets and Houston Colts, It's not official but the Dodg- ers are expected to offer in- fielder Marv Breeding, out- fielder - infielder Lee Walls, re- slief pitcher Ken Rowe and first} all four of the "pool players" or none, depending on how many they want to part with and how many the Colts and Mets want to buy. The Dodgers are obligated to sell only one player, for $30,000, and the Mets and Colts are obligated to buy none. But all four could go for the same price if the Dodgers want to. sell and the others want to buy. There had been speculation 4 relief pitcher Larry Sherry would be placed in the poo. But the guess is that the Dodgers think they could make a better deal in a trade. LIKES DODGERS "ill Skowron: also looked like a trade prospect before the World Series, but he hit .385 in the series and Bavasi said he was impressed. "TI love it here and I love the , RE SS eee "Talinees Down But Long Way -- Off Being Out LOS ANGELES (AP)--Is the New York Yankee dynasty crumbling? Do four straight defeats by Los A Dodg- ers mean the end of an era for Mickey Mantle and company in the American League? As much as some Yankee- haters would have you believe it, this is hardly the case, The Yanks breezed to the pennant by 10% games over the runner- up Chicago White Sox although Mickey Mantle played only 65 of the 161 games and Roger Maris appeared in only 90. They probably will do it again next ear, Perhaps the example set by the Dodger pitching staff will encourage the rest of the league to take out after the Yanks after this damaging blow to |their pride and prestige. Per- |haps--but don't count on it, | Th myth of Yankee invinci- bility really is a myth. Sandy OTTAWA (CP)--Rick Black is a handsome 20-year-old who, before this football season, had never seen an onside kick or a recovered punt. The plays were outdated before he was born. But when he came to Ottawa Rough Riders coach Frank Clair introduced him to those two old chestnuts and the kid from Mount Allison University learned so well that you'd al- most think he invented them. The teaching paid off three times in the first half of the Eastern Football Conference schedule, two of them Sept. 23 against British Columbia Lions when the old tricks saved the game for Riders. In that game speedy halfback Whit Tucker, fastest man on the Ottawa squad, fell back into on- side position as Black kicked a deliberately short punt. Tucker Koufax, Johnny Podres Don Drysdale proved the point, holding the Yanks to a .171 bat-| |ting average. The only trouble is that no caught the ball in a key play that led to an Ottawa touch- down two plays later. Then Black; who also moves "Professor Clair = Finds Fine Pupil In 'Rick' Blacx Dodgers,' Skowron said after the last series game Sunday./ "IT don't want to leave." | Utility infielder Dick Tracew- ski also strengthened his posi-) tion in the World Series, play- ing all four games ag second| FORD IS CAPABLE base. Steve Shafer, the Vancouver recovery man, de- liberately held back from the ball hoping for a no-yards pen- alty against Ottawa, Black, the ony Rider eligible for the re- covery, flashed in and flopped atop the football. NO ACCIDENTS Taken together, the two plays amounted to the neatest piece of robbéry since the great Brit- ish train holdup, It had been a long time since a club turned two such oldies into a game- winning combination. After the game, while Van- couver coaches were still ex- plaining to some of their younger. players what had hap- pened, two reporters suggested to Clair that the plays had been accidental. "They're no joke,' Clair laughed. "Honestly, they're reg- ular plays of ours." Said Black: 'The only team in Canada that tries to stop me at the scrimmage line is Mont- real." He should have used the past tense because every coach in the Canadian Football | League has since issued instruc- jtions that somebody is to look after Mr. Black from now on. | Coach Dave Skrien of Vancou- ver said Black's recovery was the move that killed the Lions. who would have had the ball inside the Rider zone. Instead, Ottawa marched to a winning }touchdown in seven plays. 4 * ish --~<-- Swe Sports Scribe fo Cel 2 Re £ Aer OSHAWA BOWLING NEWS -- Predicts NHL Challenge fORONTO (CP)--Ulf Jans-; son, a Swedish spof'ts writer, left for Stockholm Monday posi- tive that he will return to North America some day for a unique Stanley Cup playoff series, Jansson believes his country will challenge for the National Hockey League's championship trophy, making pro hockey a truly international sport.
