GOLDEN TEXT: Colossians 3:16. it was. they who were should do. -- Acts BIBLE LESSON Peter Delivers Superb Sermon By N. SPEER JONES The setting of the first part of today's lesson is Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost. Pente- cost was a Jewish harvest festi- val, observed on the 50th day from the second day of the Passover. The word '"'Pente- cost" comes from the Greek "pentekoste,"" meaning 50th. As the apostles were all to- gether "in one place," the Holy Spirit gave them the gift of speaking in other tongues. This 'attracted a multitude, many of whom were foreigners who rec- ognized their native languages being used by the apostles. When some mocked, saying they were 'drunk, Peter gave re- tuttal, beginning his great Pen- tecostal sermon assigned for to- day's lesson. The words spoken by Joel, the prophet, which Peter refers to jare found in Joc] 2:28-32. Pente- leost apparently was its initial lfulfilment, but the phenomena |mentioned in verses 19 and 20 |have not yet come pass. | This is the first sermon of the Christian church, a sermon di- rectly inspired by the Holy Spirit, Its major theme, notice, lis. the certainity of Christ's resurrection. The resurrection is set forth as the explanation of Christ's death, as the cause of the outpouring of the Holy ee eee GOLDEN TEXT "Let the word of, Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and ad- monishing 'one another in psalms and hymns end spir- itual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord,"--Colossians 3:16. Spirit, as the certification of Christ's Messianic position. Pe- ter uses the citation from Joel to persuade the Jews that this resurrection was _ scripturally prediction, but his own persua- sion stems not from prophecy but from his own experience. Verses 37-47 of Acts 2 deal with the creation and character of the first Christian church. "In the breaking of bread" (verse 42) is thought by some to mean the celebration of the Lord's Supper; others believe it to mean only a common meal. The Latin word for "'communh- ion" meant "to share." The early :urch in Jerusalem tried to develop a community of goods, but it was apparently not successful, for Paul later took up a collection in Asia for the poor at Jerusalem, the only church for which it was at- tempted. The reference to continuing worship at the temple (verse 46) is quite natural, for the split between Judaism and Christian-|a2nd exhorting. High-Priced MD > Goes To Africa By R. BARCLAY WARREN Last year in this column I men- tioned Dr. Howard H.. Hamlin, chief surgeon in a Chicago hos- pital and professor in surgery: at the University of Illinois Medical School. He had spent a few weeks helping in hospital work in Africa. As he and his wife boarded the plane to return to Chicago, he felt that he was leaving part of his heart in Africa: On October 16, Dr. and Mrs. Hamlin sailed from New York on the Queen Mary. After visit- practice to become a-surgeon- missionary at about $100 a month. Before emabrking, Dr. and Mrs. Hamlin were present at special services on a_ college campus near Boston. This was good for the young people. So often youth are urged to get a college education so that they can, make more money. But here they listened to a man who is leaving the big income and using his training and skills to serve where the need is greater: His example is. prov- ,|S0 set upon his IMS USTAWA TIMES, Saturday, November 2,1963 13 | eternal. life. But his heart was great posses- sions that he turned sadly away from' Jesus and the path of serving with his wealth. Later he died and left it all. Lu. 18:24, Money. What is money? We all like to have some of it. But when it hinders us from the path of discipleship and the joy of serving the Lord with all our Strength and means, our money makes us very poor. One who has done the most for the human family was . but He is: still giving out fo aii who will come to Him, the true riches. Paul wrote of Him, 2 Cor. 8:9. "For ye know the The rich young ruler desired grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, | that, though he was rich; yet that ye through his vert, might be rich." . je ae SEND EDUCATION AIDS WINNIPEG (CP)--The Mani- toba Teachers' Society has sent a shipment of ty pe writers, Seleace * tebersun-<aeibasat nce ratory: and books to Manitobs-trained teachers now teaching in Ma- laysia. It concerns the "speak- ins with tongues." As we saw, i~Acts the tongues (or lan- guages) used by the apostles were understood by various for- eigners in the assemblage. In-I Corinthians, however, it would seem that the tongues spoken of were not understood by others, except a chosen few with the gift called interpreta- tion. reul's major 'point is that while this gift of speaking with tongues is spectacular, it is not "SPIRITUALISTS" THE PSYCHIC SCIENCE CHURCH Orange Temple, 2:30 P.M.
