McINTYRE HOOD Special London, England Correspondent To The Oshawa Times LONDON -- All of the home countries of Britain are now out, of the competition for the Euro- pean Nations Cup. The last sur- vivor, Northern Ireland, put up a great battle against Spain at Belfast, but were eliminated by the only goal of the game, As these two countries had played a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the series in Madrid, hopes were high that the Irish- men, on the own territory, would come through with a win. 'But it was not to be. Spain reinforced the teem -lwhich was held to a draw in Madrid by bringing two of their stars now playing for Italian' clubs, and their superlative skill was a little too much for the battling Irishmen. It was no easy victory, however. In the first half, Northern Ire- land looked like scoring on sev- eral occasions, but luck was against the wearers of the green. They tired perceptibly in the second half, and in the 65th! minute of the game, Gento fin- ished off a superb Spanish pass- OLD COUNTRY SOCCER SCORES ing movement by slamming the ball into the corner of the net. Ireland tried hard to get on even terms in the closing min- utes, but their best efforts were LONDON (Reuters)--Results of soccer games played in Brit- shawa Generals Edge Hamilton 6-5 Via Big Comeback The most exciting OHA Jun- jor "A" hockey contest played at Bowmanville this season * to date, took place last night, when); Oshawa Generals edged Hamil- ton Red Wings, 6-5 before 1,200 enthusiastic supporters. Generals accomplished the victory the hard way, under mew coach Wren Blair, who worked feverishly behind the bench, as his charges. overcame an early 3-0 deficit, scored six unanswered goals, then relin- quished a pair in the third period to Hamilton before the final bell. Blair had nothing but praise for his crew. 'Any team that is down three goals, and comes up off the floor for a victory has 'to be reckoned with, and this win tonight indicated that we should come on stronger as the season progresses," stated their new leader. Oshawa, with their come- from-behind: triumph, strength- ened their hold on fifth place, and crept to within one paint of fourth place co-holders, St. Catharines Black Hawks and Niagara, Falls. Hamilton, playing aggressive- ly in an attempt to secure their first victory, dragged them- selves wearily to their respec- _tive dressing room at the con- clusion of the game, forced to add the tenth game to their growing list of winless outings. Youthful Oshawa defenceman Bobby Orr was responsible for the game winning goal, early in the third period, when he com- bined with Danny O'Shea, pick- ed up O'Shea's shot off the goal- post, and scored while playing a man short. This gave Generals a 6-3 edge early in the final period, but Hamilton came right back with two more to increase the ten- sion greatly. Red Wings' coach, Eddie Bush pulled goaltender Allan Frank in the dying sec- onds, but Generals' netminder Dennis Gibson stymied any at- tempts to deadlock the score. Orr, who took three penalties in the game, something unusual for the 15-year-old sophomore, also scored in the second period, to put his club in front 4-3, and in the opening frame engineer- ed Oshawa's opening tally by leftwinger Bill Little. Other Generals' goalscorers were. Danny O'Shea, Bill Smith (his first in an Oshawa uniform) and George Vail. Those fans who came to eval- uate the ability of young Peter "Little" Big M Mahovlich were leftwinger paced his club with two goals and two assists, His linemates, Jimmy Peters, and Johnny Gofton also tallied one each. This line accumulated 10 scoring points. Bryan Campbell registered Hamilton's other al. SHORT NOTES: Oshawa Gen- erals' manager - coach, Wren Blair spent the entire afternoon yesterday prying burly defence- man, Rick Foley, from Marl- boro GM Buck Houle. Foley, who made his debut in a /Gen- erals uniform: last evening was an instant hit with Oshawa fans. His size, 6' 2", 215 pounds and ability t0 move play out of his end will prove a great asset to the young Oshawa defence . . Danny O'Shea besides his goal, set up three other tallies and was very effective in various situations, such as killing penal- ties and working on the power play. O'Shea provided the lead- ership despite the fact he sat out a 10-minute misconduct pen- alty in the opening period . Bill Smith was moved in along- side O'Shea for several shifts, with Bob Marshall on the right side. This line proved to be dan- gerous on many occasions . . Blair was ejected from the game in the third period. At 19.18, referee Frank Slota call- ed a "delaying the game'"' pen- alty on Oshawa, then less than two minutes later, Red Wirgs' coach Eddie Bush employed similar tactics but escaped sen- tence. This brought anger from Wren Blair, who slapped the boards because Slota refused to reciprocate with a call on Bush, GREENWOOD RACE RESULTS | FIRST RACE -- 7 Furs. for Maiden! two-year-olds.
