Beliveau Defensive Star, Record Shows MONTREAL (CP)--Big Jean Beliveau might have more ad- mirers if he didn't make it look 80 easy. It's safe to say most of the Montreal fans know the offen- sive prowess of the rangy centre with the effortiess stride. A master playmaker, Beli- veau leads the National Hockey League in assists with 19 and is tied for the over-all scoring leadership with Chicago's Bobby Hull. Fewer fans , probably are aware that Beliveau is a stand- out defensively as well. He makes it look easy, but his op- posite number doesn't score. In the 16 games Canadiens have played so far, the opposing team's centre has managed only one goal while Beliveau was on the ice. That was in Chicago Oct. 20-- Montreal's first game of the season against . Hawks--when Stan Mikita got away from his six - foot - three shadow long enough to score. Last season, big Jean played in 69 games and his opposing centres scored a total of 11|leased today show Mikita third! Balon, Mtl goals.
