2 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesdey, November 19, 1963 Sod Turned One Year Ago :Last November Col. R. S. McLaughlin publicly 'turned the sod" at Eastview Park, the site of the. new Boys' Club building. On Thursday, almost exactly a year later, he will be laying the cornerstone of the completed building, and years of discussion ani planning will finally seem 'vorthwhile. A year is a long time, but a tour round the building proves easily that that time has been put to good use. One hundred and fifty feet by 144 feet, the club building stands - facing south on the northwest corner Eulalie avenue and Central park boulevard, south. An im- pressive brick building, it has considerably changed the face of Eastview Park. The new Boys' Club is a eturdy building. The founda- tions are of reinforced concrete and steel, and the floors are supported with ste] bar joist. The roof deck i- light con crete, the walls solid masonry, and the windows. aluminum. The outside panels are of pre- cast concrete wit! marble fac- ing. The interior of the build- ing is entirely decorated, with a permanent porcelain finish to the wall in the washrooms and by the pool. Cadet grey is the basic inte- rior color. Accent colors, per- | simmin, orange, blue and gold, were co-ordinated by a. color consists of three sand and gravel filters for efficiency. The pool water will be filtered three times a day, every eight hours, and a chlorinator will €ontrol the chlorine content of the water. Also in the *asement is a room where the Eastview Park Neighborhood Association may hold their meetings, as_ their present' club-house in Eastview Park is to be pulled down. In Great Britain the first Boys' Club was the Hulme Boys' Club founded in Manchester in 1886. The first to use the Boys' Club name in Canada was the East End Boys' Club of Saint John, New Brunswick, founded in 1900. The two} locker rooms have doors onto the pool, with the pool man- ager's office between them. The | Olympic-size pool, 25 metres in length, is 9% feet at its deep- est point, three feet at the shallow end. Starting blocks can be placed at either end, and round the walis of the pool are ten under-water lights. There is space in the bleachers for 75 adults. Water safety equipment has been presented by the Y's Men's Club of Oshawa, and the lifeguard's chair by the Water Safety branch of the Oshawa Red Cross. BASKETBALL COURTS The well-lit gymnasium can be adapted for two smaller bas- ket ball courts, playing from side to side, or one large one, from end to end. Three bad- minton courts, doui'es, can be set up, and a volleyball court. There are fixtures in the f-oor for apparatus and emergency lighting in the wall. An area originally intended tobe used for a stage, which was later exclud- ed from the plans, will be used for sterage, and there is another small storage reom at the back. A varied gymnasium pro- gram will be conducted in the evenings and ali day Saturday. Down in the ba- nent is the boiler room. The building will be heated by gas. There is a do- mestic water supply, and a tank hol@ing 75@ gallons. Three small gas tanks will heat the SIMCOE HALL BOYS CLUB showers.
