Attention was turned toward the formation of a _ strong nucleus of Boys' Clubs and the first one opened for the purpose of setting the pace for the future was the Rosemount Boys' Club in Montreal sponsored by the Kinsmen Club in that city. HISTORY RECALLED Opened in 1949 by Lord Alex- ander, the Honorary Patron, the Rosemount Boys' Club was tors and accepted into Welfare Federation. By the end of 1950 33 clubs had been enrolled, in 1952, 40 clubs, in 1954, 46, in 1956, 56 clubs, and by the end of 1958 there were 69 clubs in 38 com- munities. Eighteen of these clubs were in buildings which had been erected as Boys' Club buildings. The year 1949 saw the opening of the National Office. under Mrs. Dorothy Aspell, the Na- tional Office Manager, and grad- ually a-competent executive was formed in this office. The national organization was originally financed by annual grants of $500 each from the Rotary, Kiwanis and Kinsmen's Clubs of Montreal. A fund ac- cumulated during the war years by the Kinsmen's Clubs, for use in youth work, was also given to placed under a Board of Direc- the organization. This grant amounted to over $6,000. The first federal grant came in 1951 and $10,000 is now received an- nually. A $3,000 provincial grant came from British Columbia in 1956, and another from Ontario in 1959. All member clubs re- ceive some special support from special Foundation grants which have been secured and spent for specifie purposes. Scientists Quizzed BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Reuters)--If the ice cap cover- ing the North Pole were thawed, would it freeze again? If more rain were made to fall on London, would Paris be- come drier? ' These are some of the ques- tions being pondered by scien- tists planning the International Hydrological Decade to be launched, probably in 1965, un- der the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The project provides for 10 |years of exhaustive research jinto the water potential of the world. Every country in the world is expected to investigate water resources from rain and sea, surface and underground, About 600 scientists came from the United States, Russia, West Germany, Australia, Su- dan, and many other countries to pool their knowledge at pre- liminary meetings here re- cently. At the sessions of the Latin American conference for the study of arid regions, they dis- cussed such problems as how to change trade winds or use the gulf stream to turn deserts into gardens. WEEKLY MEETS Weekly meetings of the boys' and girls' stamp club at the new Oshawa Boys' Club are conduct- ed by a volunteer -worker. Stamp games, trading and sell ing periods, discussion periods and, occasionally, a stamp z°:- ~ tion form the evening's pro gram, A Salute... TO A WONDERFUL ORGANIZATION !!
