12. THE OSHAWA TIMES, Fridey, November 22, 1963 Steelers Ed Brown Gets His Big Test PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Sun- day is a day of reckoning for Ed Brown, the quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers, For the first time since being traded by the Chicago Bears, he'll face his old teammates in a regular sea- son game--and a crucial one for both teams. The rugged Bears, after whip- ping Green Bay 26-7 last week, held a one-game lead over the Packers in the National Foot- ball League's Western Division with a 9-1 record. The Steelers are in fourth place in the Eastern Division with a 6-3-1 record and need a) victory to maintain their long- shot chance at the section crown. If the Steelers lose it won't be because of poor playing on Brown's part, His consistently fine quarterbacking has kept the Steelers in the race all sea- son, despite some shoddy per- formances by Pittsburgh's de- fensive platoon. Brown was with the Bears for! eight years and in 1956 led them to a Western Division title--the only one for Chicago in the last 17 years. But he fell out of coach George Halas' favor and by 1961 was benched in favor of Billy Wade, the present Bears' quar- terback. "I don't think I was given a real good shot after '56," Brown said. "I was never the first- string quarterback again and had to share the job with Zeke Bratkowski and Wade. But after the '61 season I was fed up and asked to be traded." NEW YORK (AP) -- New York Giants call Yankee Stad- ium home, and at times this National Football League sea- son they have platooned their troops the way the Yankees ENGLISH RACE HORSE IS FAST SWIMMER AS WELL WORCESTER, England (AP) -- Billy Buck, a 33-to-1 ghot, lost the second race at Worcester Wednesday by a short head to a boat, ' Billy took a dislike to orth- édox racing at the first fence of the two-mile ferry hurdle. He stopped short. His jockey went flying. Whereon Billy bolted off the course and took a mighty leap over the rails into the Severn River. It looked like a swim-over- until a late runner --sorry rower--forced in his wake. It was a double - oared en- try ridden by Geoffrey Ward- Allen, member of Worcester Town Rowing Club and David Denny, race-course veterinary | surgeon. Billy put on a spurt, going gamely down river despite 14 pounds of lead in his saddle. The crowd in the stands | could see the tussle and | cheered Billy on Course officials cheered the | hoat. And the boat: proved the better stayer. After four fur- longs it crept alongside Billy | and a rope snaked out, cow- | boy style. The boat made for the bank Stable lads hauled Billy | ashore, home and wet. Back in the stables, they | poured half a pint of whiskey | down his throat. The switches, made-to cover injuries, have worked out as well as they once did for the | Yankees, as the Giants have ib ulled their way to a one-game jlead in the Eastern Division race, Two more line-up changes will jbe made Sunday in the big bat- tle with St. Louis Cardinals, who are tied for second behind the Giants. Defensive halfback Dick ; Lynch, one of the main perform- ers in the fine pass defence of the Giants, is out, and Alex | os Webster, the fullback, probably will miss the game with the Cardinals Dick Pesonen will take Lynch's place, being moved from the safety spot where Pes- onen has been filling in for in- jured Allan Webb. Webb is healthy again. The fullback will be Joe Mor- , rison, who has played halfback, i and PONTIAC REMEMBER WHEN? ... ig re gon md BEST USED CAR Lew Jenkins flattened Pete Lelio of Chicago 22 tee wie eeeneiant - If you are looking for the smooth, dependable perfor provided by pionship he had won the CHEVROLET or PONTIAC make it a point to visit our lot RIGHT.
