14 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, November 27, 1963 BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT PWA Sets New Pace In Bid To Save Time EDMONTON (CP) -- Pacific Western. Airlines threw tradi- tion to the wind when it intro- duced a shuttle service between Calgary and Edmonton with its Chieftain Airbus, a dressed up DC-4 that makes three round trips daily. W. R. (Rusty) Harris, vice- president of PWA's northern di- vision, said in an interview that his firm is happy with the first six months' record and "'it is being well received by the pub- lic." Breaking tradition, PWA eliminated reservations and ad- vance tickets, Passengers carry their own baggage to the air- eraft. For this, PWA charges $11 each way---there are no round trip fares -- compared i with $13 one way by Trans-Can- ada Air Lines. which operates out of the international airport, 20 miles south of Edmonton. Tickets are sold aboard the 66-seat aircraft. An agent uses a portable cash drawer to sell tickets en route, Aimed at the businessman, the three flights daily run Mon- day through Friday with one trip Saturday morning and one Sunday night. A survey of 1,000 passengers this summer showed 80 per cent of the patrons were on business jaers while the othens were gen- jerally pleasure trips between ithe two main Alberta centres. Since the service was intro- duced in May, PWA has run 740 flights and carried more than 16,000 passengers. The average number of passengers in: June was 22.5, and in October it was ment closely and would be in- terested in attempting to de- velop the potential in the east. As in the Vancouver-Victoria line, the Crown-owned TCA has exclusive rights to service the areas, He suggested TCA may be interested in following PWA's lead as well. The only cloud on PWA's air- bus horizon is the uncertainty about the Edmonton 'Municipal Airport. There is a possibility it may be closed. If it 1s, the air- bus service would die with it. A 20-mile drive to the Inter- national Airport would elimin- ate. most of the time-saving fea- tures, said Mr. Harris. In addi- tion, TCA 'runs four flights a day between the two cities from Non-Ops Adjourn Negotiations _ Until Next Week MONTREAL (CP) -- Nego- tiations between Canada's ma- jor railways and their 80,000 non-operating union employees were adjourned Tuesday until next week after a one-hour meeting. The railways presented coun- ter-proposals to the union's wel- fare demands but did not make a wage offer. The non-ops' negotiating com- mittee met to discuss the rail- way proposals, then decided to ask for another meeting next week. The date has not been set. The 14 non-operating unions, representing employees not ac- tually running the trains, feel their wage demands are the most important point of the ne- gotiations. A They are asking for wage equality with several major Ca- nadian manufacturing | indus- tries, known as the "durable goods standard." The latest bureau of statistics figures on the durable goods up to 26, |EXPECTS AN INCREASE Mr. Harris said the winter months--when business activity |reaches its peak and car travel that air terminal. 4 90m! rauway ana union omciais estimate the wage demand would amount to a 15 to 20-cent increase over the non-ops' pre- sent average wage of $1.99 an hour. The unions are also asking for increased welfare benefits but what management contributions to such plans as are taken over by governments to be added to wages. 2,005,532 Pounds Of Tobacco Sold TILLSONBURG (CP) -- An average price of 51.54 cents a pound was realized for the 2,005,532 pounds of tobacco auc- tioned at the Ontario Filue- Cured Tobacco Growers' Mar- keting Board Exchanges.
