Old Country Soccer Has Big 'Upset Day' By M. McINTYRE HOOD Special to The Oshawa Times LONDON -- Boxing Day of 1963 will go down into soccer football history in England as the day of crazy scores, freak results. and the massacre of goalkeepers. Ten first division matches were played on that day. And in them 66 goals were scored, a record for any one day's matches in the 100 years of organized football, Fulham led the way with a 10- 1 victory over luckless Ipswich, hopelessly in last place in the table, Blackburn Rovers came to London and went back with an 8-2 victory over West Ham. with ---- now only one point behind the Spurs. BLACK SPOT There was one black spot in the day's pi ings. Four players were ordered off the field for questionable tactics. Most noteworthy of the of- fenders was Pat Crerand, Scot- tish international wing half of Manchester United. This makes him the fifth United player to be ordered off the field since the start of the present season, the others being Noel Cantwell, Dave Herd, Albert Quixall and Denis Law, who is now about half-way through his 28-day sus- pension, This record is quite out of Liverpool scored six goals against Stoke and Burnley scored six against Manchester United. Chelsea scored five against Blackpool, and Toitten- ham and West Bromwich Albion shared eight goals between them in a 44 draw. TOP SCORERS Graham Leggat of Fulham. Andy Lochhead of Burniey, and Roger Hunt of Liverpool led the day's scorers with four goals each, Leggat securing three of 'his within three minutes.
