The tendency to concentrate on the play of a particular suit instead of on the 'play of the hand as a whole is a common failing for the defeat of many con- tracts. Here is a type of hand where many declarers would go wrong. West leads a spade against three notrump and South takes the nine with the queen, How should he play the hand? He is looking at six ready- made tricks -- two spades, two hearts and two clubs -- and has to build up three more to make the contract. He can iead a diamond to the queen and force out the ace (which East, on the bidding, is almost sure to have), but this will give him only two addition- al tricks and leave him one short of the contract. Or he may play the A-K and another club in. the hope of find- ing that suit divided 3-2, but this will also bring-him to only eight tricks, Since neither of these meth- thods of play looks very prom- ing, South should look else- where to see if he can produce the necessary ninth trick. And if he studies the situation care- fully, he will come up with the method of play that gives him a legitimate chance of making the contract. At trick two he plays a to the king and ee Aye diamond from dummy. East cannot afford to go up with the ace, which would immediately give declarer three diamond tricks and the contract, So let's say he ducks and lets South win with the king. declarer now abandons the suit and plays the ace and another club, When it turns out that the clubs are divided 3-2, South then has nine tricks to show for his efforts.
