ABUUT UHAKM "Want Glamour Curves Eat Solid Breakfast BY NANCY TAYLOR Dear Nancy Taylor: Please, please tell me what to @o to GAIN. I'm just s0 skinny #'s terrible! D. L. Dear D. L.: Underweight is frequently caused by eating the wrong kind of food by fatigue or over- activity, or by psychological factors such as worry or mental strain. It can of course also be a symptom of disease, espe- cially any sudden loss of weight. I assume that you have chcek- ed with your physician and that your condition is one you can improve with proper care. Here are some hints that will help you get some of those pounds en that you need. If possible, take a nap in the afternoon. Al- low plenty of time for your meals and eat regularly. Eat slowly and chew your food thoroughly. Always have your breakfast include whole grain starch and sweet fruit. Nevér neglect your in-between- meal nibble. Do your daily exercise slow- Wy and allow plenty of time for it. Avoid any strenuous exer- cise. Walk slowly one-half hour daily. ' Avoid extreme temperatures in your bath. Your showers and baths should be lukewarm. If you smoke, do so in mod- eration after meals -- never before. Sleep nine hours every night. Learn to take things easier and relax your nerves. When bad complexion accom: panies.an underweight condi- tion, it is frequently caused by poor circulation, nervousness, weak digestion or constipation. As you rebuild your figure, take extremely good care of your skin, sO you may have a beautiful complexion along with improved figure. While you are gaining weight, select your wardrobe so it will add weight to your figure. In a cold climate, dress warmly, as your body would otherwise have to burn too much fuel to main- tain normal temperature, which would slow down the weight- gaining process. If your appetite is poor, save pace in your stomach and have your food concentrated. Vita- min B is very important in relation to your appetite. Use a variety of foods since variety increases appetite. Fats should come late in the meal as they stay longest in the stomach and make you hungry less soon. Consequently, the proportion of fat in your menu should gener- ally be low. Sugar should be last in the meal as it usually spoils one's appetite. And finally -- chew your food well -- for that will make it easier to digest -- and food should be thoroughly digested. Weight gaining is a slow, deliberate process which may take a long time to achieve. Patience, the desire to do it, and persistence will get you the figure of your dreams. GIFTS FOR ALL OCCASIONS ae Nancy Taylor: an you tell me something @bout what gifts to give when. I never know if I'm being osten. tatious or too frugal. Dear J. S.: we The most precious gift that ene can give is one that comes from one's heart -- one's sym- pathy, love, encouragement, and happy disposition. These cost not a cent but are priceless in value. A gift should be a com- pliment to the receiver and a display of great expense is gen- pages ey ~~ taste; rather give a gi value accordi e- ng: to us You should not send a lavish gift to someone who could not Possibly reciprocate with one of equal value as it would only embarrass the receiver rather 'J than please him. A gift of origiz- ality and thoughtfulness shows that the giver has put personal attention and effort into the selection. One author has said in one oi her books: "A letter is a gift of time and attention, and a good one is a treasure." Telegrams are also thoughtful. Try to make your gifts unusual though inexpensive -- something that is needed. Give little things that your friends are interested in: books, plants, magazine sub- scriptions, one or two pieces of silver, records, clever games and of course, flowers or candy are always acceptable. Even though the friend may be on a diet, she will enjoy sharing the latter with others she is fond of. Fruit baskets, little personal gifts, small items for the house. and objects picked out at out-of- the-way shops will also be ap- preciated. None of the items listed above are expensive, yet when given with love and af- fection they are more accept- able than a flashy, handsome gift which is given for show or given to please the ego of the giver. Appreciation of a_ kindness can be shown by a gift, and one can be sent to a weekend host- ess, but the present does not take the place of a bread-and- butter note. Bon Voyage gifts are usually books, fruit and candy. However, if the receiver is traveling by boat, you can eliminate fruit since most ships have an abundance of it for the passengers. Instead, a lovely flower arrangement would be gladly received. Such gifts are sent to the steamer with name and cabin number marked on it. Gifts for a Christening are not necessary, but can be given if you are a friend of the parents. Jewelry is not considered good form, baby garments are. T' Godparents may give a silver cup, fork and knife set, and these may be engraved with the child's initials. Engagement gifts are also a matter of choice. The young man may present the girl he is to marry with any gift or gifts he chooses, even lavish jewelry -- but wearing apparel and necessities of life are forbidden. Nor must the bride-to-be accept! such gifts from his family or permit them to assist with the 'wedding expense. In case the engagement is broken, the ring must be returned. Wedding gifts are always sent to the bride. Money is given only by members of the family, and wearing apparel is never given since all gifts are for both bride and groom. At this time, members of both families may give jewelry and heirlooms. The bride can give her brides- maids unimportant gifts, but a tore valuable one should be given to the maid-of-honor. These are presented at the bridesmaids' tea, or at the wed- ding rehearsal. IT TAKES WILL POWER Dear Nancy Taylor: _ "T've been trying to stop bit- ing my nails but with no suc- cess. What can I do to help myself?" Dear Teenager: Breaking yourself of the habit A Teenager Hair Styles @ PHONE 728-9651 e ANTONIO'S. Coiffures 136 SIMCOE SOUTH Just South of Memorial Park of nail biting takes real -will power as well as a sincere de- sire on your part. Evidently you have both -- since you've shown the courage to ask for selp! . First of all, you' need re- minders to help you stop biting your nails before you start. It might be a good idea to spend the first day of your no-biting campaign just becoming con- scious of when and under what circumstances your hands auto- matically reach for a bit of nail chewing. This way you'll be mentally prepared to flash a big red STOP sign in front of those wandering, off-course fingers. Keep in mind that it is usual- ly during a period of physical inactivity that most nail biting is done--for example, during a lecture at school. If this is one of your danger periods, clasp your hands in your lap and twiddle your thumbs. Or hold a pencil with both hands when you are not taking notes. If you go to an exciting movie -- wear gloves . .. and keep them on! Better still, if you are with your best boyfriend, tuck one hand in his, and keep your glove on the other. Also use TV-watching time as your hand- beauty-treatment time. Apply cuticle oil on your cuticles, and a creamy lubricant on your hands -- then cover all with an old pair of washable white cot- ton gloves. Ask your family and friends to remind you every time they see a nail in your mouth -- then don't get cross when they re- mind you! They'll probably be the first to compliment you on your growing nails. They planned for three weeks, and held the dance on Dec. 27. It was a great success, and marked the beginning of a whole new line of entertainment to be presented for teens at the Boys' Club. Two more dances were then held, one on Jan. 24, and the other on Feb. 14. Many thanks go out to Graham Nelson, the staff sponsor of the dance com- mittee, for organizing and chap- eroning the dances. At the Valentine's Day Dance, the club was honored by a guest appearance of Oshawa's own "Beatles", that daring, comical group from the east end. Be- cause of advance advertisement, many teenagers showed up just to see them. Although entertainment is an important aim of the dance com- mittee, the main reason for hav- ing the dances is to raise funds for the Boys' Club. A substan- tial amount has been raised to date, and this can easily be mul- tiplied in future times. The first project the committee is work- ing on is the purchasing of a professional record playing sys- tem and microphone system, to be used for the club's dances, The next dance is on Friday, March 20, starting at'7 p.m. This is expected to be the big- gest dance yet, because for spe- cial entertainment, we are hav- ing the Impalas, one of Osh- awa's newest musical and vocal groups. They consist of drums, sax, electric guitars, and male and female vocalists. This is to be a St. Patrick's Day Dance, so members and their friends should wear some- thing green. Because this is a casual-dress dance and the others were casual and semi- formal, the committee has de- cided to make the next dance a hard-time. It will be three weeks after the St. Patrick's Day Dance. I hope all the teenage members of the Boys' Club at- tend this swinging affair.
