THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesdey, April 7, 1964 3 PLANTSITTING ? For Summer Jobs Try These Ideas By JAMES McPEAK (Staff Reporter) How's your summer job situ- ation? if you haven't a job lined up, don't get despondent because a great many high school stu- dents like yourself haven't got one either. To solve this problem, a few of the more literate(?) ty pes around the editorial department put their heads together and came up with these great sug- gestions. From our glorious fashion photographer Maxim (Max) Wickens came the suggestion that one might like to do a bit of plant-sitting. When asked to explain him- self a bit further, Maxie told us that he knew of a great many people who refused to go for a vacation for fear their plants might die. Why couldn't someone volunteer, for a slight payment of course, to water and feed the piants while the owners were on vacation. Might work at that. "'How about being a tutor?"' suggested Bill Lowther. 'You can if you're smart enough and know someone who is planning to write supplemental examin- ations or just wants to improve on a certain subject." DIG THAT GARDEN Ron Devaney came up with) | the stores around Oshawa. the suggestion that a boy might like to earn a few dollars by cutting lawns or digging gar- dens. The boy. that is interested in this could place a small ad- vertisement in the paper and he would probably get a few customers. : Some of the other suggestions that rame up in our round table discussion was that an en- terprising lad could travel up to Great Bear Lake and help the fishermen get ready for win- ter. Another was gold prospecting in Northern Quebec. A_ fellow) might even start another gold rush if he hit it big. i Getting back to the serious side, a baby-sitting organiza-|. tion was suggested. This can be |. set up wit hseveral other friends and you can be the telephone contact. Another was hiring yourself to deliver or pick up groceries for mothers who haven't got the time to go themselves, If you pian to spend the sum- mer at the family cottage, you can leave a note at the near- est store telling them you are available for babysitting jobs. Amother summer cottage job is mail delivery to the outlying cottages around the lake. All you need is the family boat and the mames of the people living in the general areas. Of course there are still the old standy-by jobs -- working in SRS CRUSADER Ranger Kathy Pearse Presented With Warrant Well, it's due time I stepped forward and introduced myself. The name is Commodore, Ship's Writer for Crusader. What hap- pened te Hepaleng? She was - promoted te feading hand for . Starboard Division. Well, our "Floating Mate" is finally under "Full Sail' . Kathy Pearse (our Third Mate) re- ceived her warrant at an im- pressive ceremony recently. Her past was shown in a skit of "her life thnough Guiding." Picture a golden-haired little 'cherub -- This was not Kathy! Mary Kalynke portrayed the 'imp' Kathy as a brownie. Then Mrs. Meredith -- her Brown Owl came to the rescue, She assured us that it was "fun" te know our Mate. Louise Bilyj "played Kathy's life as a Guide. Lit- tle can be said about that -- the smiles of her parents told all. Kathy's Guide leader, Miss Weldon, was present on deck. After that Sharon Hester told of Kathy's life as'a Sea Ran- ger -- of the conferences, camps and competitions which Kathy managed to disrupt. Finally Mrs. Fox presenteq Kathy with the warrant. We are all proud of our Third Mate and wish her smooth sailing im the years ahead. At the same meeting Sally Hiley and Eleanor Kirkpatrick were enrolled. Welcome to the crew girls! Happy Rangering. Mary Kalynko received her Camp Craft badge recently. At the same time Maryanne Car- dinal received her OSR badge. This badge involves several years of hard work. Congratu-. lations girls!
