(CP)-- Two new projects get under way next week to try to help miners in this one-time boom town who now find time run- ming out on them. Starting Monday, workers will be able to start training for new jobs under the federal gov- ernment's vocational training program. The same day, a joint department of labor - national service job-placement project goes into effect. . Under the job-placement pro- ject, miners will file with the NES. Applications will be sent across the country to try to find work? for them as the antici- pated layoffs occur. Other aids being sought for the workers include relocation payments from the government, rent-free housing and interest and payment moratoriums for home-owners. This is quite a change for a community that in the middle 1950s blossomed out of the wil- derness into a thriving centre of more than 25,000 population. Production of uranium, how- ever, was suddenly well in ex- cess of demand and one mine after another in Elliot Lake and other uranium centres shut own. The death knell sounded last week for still another of Elliot Lake's four remaining produc- ers, when Rio Algom Mines Lid. announced its Milliken Mine would halt operations June 30 when its contracts to sell uran- jum expire. Milliken employs 460 miners and, although its shutdown had been expected, it was "a hard, hard blow to take," says Ed- ward Futterer, chairman of the Elliot Lake Improvement Dis- trict. The shutdown may affect about 2,000 of the town's re- maining 9,500 population, he says. "The population may de- crease by that much." - Of the other producers in this area, midway between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., only Nordic Mine is not working un- der a cloud of uncertainty. Nordic, owned by Rio Algom and employing 560 miners, has contracts running into 1971. Consolidated Denison Mines, with 950 miners, also will run out of contracts June 30, the same time as Milliken. But Deni- son officials have not said what the future plans are. There has been speculation it too will close down. The other producing mine, Stanrock, will see its contracts to sell uranium expire by De- cember, It employes about 560 miners.
