Thrusts and counter-thrusts are available to both sides in many hands, and the result is frequently determined by the amount of thought devoted by . each side to planning the play. For example, take this: hand where South is in four hearts. West leads three rounds of jspades and declarer ruffs the |third one. South realizes 'that if the jtrumps are divided 3-2, he can 'make the contract by playing three rounds of hearts and then leading a diamond. This will bring him to 10 sure tricks. But he also realizes that the jtrumps may be divided 4-1, in which case, if he draws all the trumps, he may be (and in this case, would be) defeated. So let's say that he leads a low diamond towards dummy at trick four to forestall this dan- ger. If West is on his toes and gees up with the ace and re- turns a spade. South is defeated article -- whether he trumps in his an s Ts | own hand or in dummy. West's holding of four trumps proves "4 insurmountable. (If West makes the error of ducking the dia- mond, declarer makes 10 tricks by drawing trumps and cashing his clubs.) 4:30 P.M, } 11-9-8-43-2--News; Weather and Sports T--M-Squed 6:48 PLM. @3--Huntiey Brinkiey 7:00 PLM. JULIET JONES oe However, South can make the contract by proper play despite the 4-1 trump break. After ruf- fing the spade at trick three he cashes the Q-J of hearts. When East shows out on the second trump lead, declarer discontin- ues playing trumps. He leads a diamond to the queen instead, keeping the deuce of hearts in dummy as a guard against an- other spade lead. West takes the ace of dia- monds, but he is out of ammuni- tion. When he returns a spade, which is as good a play as he can make, declarer ruffs it in dummy, discarding a club from his own hand. South then en- ters his hand with a club, draws trumps with the A-K, and easily makes the rest of the tricks.
