Take a case like this one, where West must be on his toes to defeat the contract. He leads a spade, the jack win- ning in dummy. Declarer, with'. only eight tricks at this point, cashes the A-K of clubs, hoping the queen will fall; and then continues with a club. East wins and returns a spade, West taking the queen with the ace, West thereupon returns the four of hearts, and South, who does not see the op- ponents' cards, quite oaturally goes up with the king. This loses to the ace and the con- tract goes down when East re- turns a heart, Declarer loses a spade, a club and three hearts as a result of West's fine de- fense, Now how come that West is smart enough at trick six to lead the four of hearts, not the queen, which would give de- clarer the contract when he covered with the king? The four is a_ startling play, no doubt, but it is a play practical- ly certain to defeat the con- tract. The reason is that West knows. East has the ace of hearts. He knows this because he can tell from the plays al- ready made that South is' sure to have the A-K of diamonds, South's notrump bid shows 16 to 18 points. On the first three plays he reveals the king of spades and A-K of clubs (10 points). He is bound to have the ace or king of diamonds for his notrump bid (he cannot have 16 points otherwise), and he is ermore to have them both because he would have attacked diamonds, not clubs, if he lacked either of them. It follows, therefore, that South cannot. have the ace.ot. hearts (which would give him 21 points). Gordon Locates Gin Distillery In Waterloo, Ont. LONDON (CP) -- Tanqueray Gordon and Co.
