School teachers are taken for granted in our community and few people realize that a good teacher forms the day-by-day mold that sets hundreds of young people on their way to trades and professions that will benefit the community as a whole. Realizing the lack of recogni- tion afforded to the town's teachers, the Whitby High School Board has _ prepared a series of articles the second of which appears today. One of our most respected teachers is Walter Tiessen, Vice- Principal of the Henry Street High School here in Whitby. Having served in the RCAF dur- ing the war as a navigator, Mr. Tiessen later attended the On- tario Agricultural College at Guelph and graduated in 1950. In 1952 he acquired his Master's Degree in Botany at the Uni- versity of Toronto. During the summer months | between 1947 and 1951 Mr. Ties- |sen was engaged in work which | well prepared him for his teach- |ing career in science: He work- led. for the Provincial Fruit |Branch to help improve meth- ods of production and marketing of fruit and vegetables in On- |tario.
