RAMSEY Frequently in the Old Testa- ment, we find mention of the mations of the then - known world and, often, long passages devoted to their character and destiny. In today's lesson we find three basic truths contained in those passages from Isaiah deal- ing with the second Assyrian as a threat to Israel. (1) God will use Assyria as the instrument for wreaking His indignation against Israel. Here the Assyrians are mere tools in God's hands. Their power to waste and destroy comes solely from Him as they unconsciously do His work, pouring out His wrath on the people of Israel. ; (2) God will punish Assyria for her boastfulness. The prophet describes Assyria's in as an ambitious, self-exalta- tion amounting to blasphemy. The godless Assyrians fail to see themselves as God's tool, and will be punished for their conceit. (3) God will bring back a remnant of Israel to the land of promise. With this note of hope, Israel will cling to the Lord with repentance and living faith, never again to lean upon a Gentile nation for refuge and security. WARNS NATIONS In the prophesies of Amos, God warns the nations of His coming judgments. It was an era of great prosperity for the entire northern kingdom, yet signs of spiritual decay and moral disintegration were evi- dent with the wealth and power. The first judgment is pro- nounced. upon the Gentile na- tions of Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, Amon and Moab for their inhumanity (1:3 ~ 2:3) Edom had _ been pitiless; Chosen Israel Moab, impious toward the dead. The other four, though they had sinned without law, had vio- lated the dictates of conscience. The second judgment was on Judah. for despising the law of the land (2:4, 5). Judah knew God as the Lord. She had the revelation of His will, the truth of His written law and com- mandments; yet she forsook them for lies, idols and images of false gods. So God predicted Judah's destruction by fire, a prophecy fulfilled during the siege of Jerusalem under Nebu- chadnezzar. THIRD JUDGMENT The third judgment was pro- nounced upon Israel for her so cial sins (2:6-16). Four specific transgressions are mentioned by the prophet: Injustice, indif- ference to the needs of the poor, incest, and luxury combined with idolatry. Surrounding na- tions would fall upon Israel and drought and pestilence would stalk the land. | Because our lesson today is| concerned with nationalism, let us now consider Paul's magnifi- cent address to the Athenian philosophers (Acts 17:22 -31). Here, Paul is not discussing philosophy, he is proclaiming divine revelation and in so do- ing, he aclis their attention to three great truths regarding G od. First he tells them God was the Creator of the world. Start- ing from the God Unknowa (v 23), Paul makes a rich state- ment revealing God as the Creator of the world. With all their learning, the Greeks had not conceived of one God as the Creator. : NO REAL EXPLANATION Though the mystery of the world's origin had occupied them since 600 B.C., they had no real explanation for it. Secondly, Paul tells them God regulates all mations, that the geographical environment influencing them is God's in- tent. It is also God's purpose to have times, seasons and bound- aries for all nations. Thirdly, Paul proclaims God as the source of all life. God gives all ang men can only of- fer themselves to Him in return. Thus, through the ages we see God's role among nations: it is not for Him to change na- tions Himself; rather it is for men and women to change and, individually or in groups, to change society and government. On my third day in hospital my family was informed that I was going into cardiac failure. My superintendent, who was in the city and had been to see me, called for a prayer meeting at my church that evening. Many who had made plans for the eve- ning, cancelled them and went to pray. My son, who is a doc- tor, brought the superintendent to my room. Though I was under heavy sedation, I roused sufficiently to know that the minister, fulfilling the direction chest pain ceased on the 10th day. I had sought to achieve the experience of Paul as expressed in Philippians 4:11: "I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content." Also, I wholeheartedly agree with the statement of former President Eisenhower in the chapter on his heart attack in his book, Mandate For Change: "Experiences such as I had gone through cause a man to develop an unusual gratitude and affection for all those who do so much to help him back to health."
