14 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, June 4, 1964 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR "Everything From Soup To Nuts' Three games were played in the UAW Softball League schedule last might and they "SANTA CLAUS" brought an "early Christmas bonus" to his backers yesterday at Epsom Downs, when the big - Trish4rained colt moved out of the pack at Tattenham Cor- mer and exploded in the long stretch run to score a one- * Jength victory, in the 185th running of the famed Epsom Derby and cop the big slice of the richest prize in the Derby history, Santa Claus was favorite, heaviest choice in years, but his fans were not disappointed. Now let's hope this is the week for the favorite to win the big races, Latest re- port from the Belmont-Aqueduct area is that Northern Dancer will go to the post on Saturday afternoon as top favorite to win the 96th running of the Belmont Stakes. The "Dancer" has claimed two legs of the pedestal that bears racing's famed "Triple Crown" but in both the Kentucky Derby and The Preakness, the favorite (Hill Rise, in both events) failed to win. Northern Dancer has beaten his rivals twice -- it's to be hoped he can also beat the "favorite jinx", if such a mythical handicap really exists. Present indications are that there'll only be five or six horses going to the post, which means they'll all have plenty of room to run and at a mile- and-a-half, they'll have both the time and space to run the type of race they choose. Many figure that Hill Rise can make his best bid, with fewer entries. and at the longer dis- tance, since he is a big colt, with a long stride, Not even pretending to know anything about horses, we have only one thought on the matter, since Hill Rise didn't seem to run as well in The Preakness as in The Derby, maybe he has passed his peak form. Trainer Horatio Luro is quoted as saying Northern Dancer hasn't yet reached his top form. produced a variety of resulis, one being an extremely close score, the second a medium- type decision and the third a clean-cut victory. SCUGOG CLEANERS WIN Scugog Cleaners defeated Body Shop 5-4, in their game at Alexandra Park. The winners got a run in the first inning on Siblock's opening single, two passed balls and a sacrifice fly by Sutton, In the third, Howard opened with a single and scored later on an infield out and an error, In the fourth frame, Lawson walked with two out and then Howard produced the big blow to help win his own game, a homer, that made the score 4-3. In the fifth, Westfall singled with one out, Wallace walked and then a passed ball and infield out let Westfall score what proved the winning run, off pitcher Ken Beers. Howard, pitching for Scugog Cleaners, was tagged for a homer by Whiteley, first batter in the second inning. In the third, Curran singled, so did Weales run.in the $th singled to centre. and scored later on a two-bagger by Caley, MAVERICKS BEAT DOVER'S In a game at Lakeview Park, the Chassis Plant "Mavericks" defeated Truck Line Dover's 10- 7. Both teams started out in high gear, each scoring five runs in their first trip to the plate but after that, Phillips, pitching for Maveric?s, founr his form and strikeouts and allowed only two runs in the claimed eight rest of the distance. Mavericks opened with a walk double by Boivin, to Hall, another by Campbell, Campbell was that missed, play safé on catcher's error. Henry singled after one out and Butler doubled to complete the big rally. Dover's came right back in their half with three-straight singles by Leveck, Talbot, and Tanden, followed by Langford's triple. Then Waller was safe on an error, R.
