By MURRAY CHASS Associated Press Sports Writer Willie Mays has dropped an- other fly bail for an error. And 10 years ago he did the same thing. San Francisco's great centre r made the error Wednes- day night, nut it-was harmiess as the Giants blanke¢é Pitts- burgh Pirates 3-0. Don Clendenon was the recep- fent of Mays' rare generosity with two out in the seventh in- ning. Mays ran back for Clen- denon's fly ball, turned around and waited, ready to eat up the ball with his famous basket catch. The ball fell into his glove but fell right out again. The last time that happened was on Sept. 9, 1954, in the Polo Grounds against Chicago Cubs. Just one inning before Mays made his first error of the sea- son, he got into the middle of a protest lodged by Pirates' man- ager Danny Murtagh. A ground ball hit by Willie McCovey in the sixth and called Mays, who was at third base after hitting a triple. Murtaugh contended Mays should have been called out under the rules governing a runner hit by a batted ball. IN FOUL TERRITORY Umpire Jocko Conlan ruled, however, that Mays was in foul territory and could not be called out. While Mays was being hit, Philadelphia was having trou- ble getting hits but still nipped Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0 in 11 innings. In the other NL games, Milwaukee Braves edged Cin- cinnati Reds 3-2 and St. Louis Cardinals defeated Chicago Cubs 7-5. Houston at New York was postponed by rain. Allowed to remain at third in the disputed sixth inning, Mays scored minutes later as Orlando Cepeda slammed his fifth home run, Cepeda later drove in Mays with a sacrifice fly. Ron Herbe! limited the Pi- rates to four hits in winning his Whitey Ford, In Rare Form Blanks By MIKE RATHET Associated Press Sports Writer Whitey Ford, said teammate Ralph Terry, wins because "he's got it in three places-- here, here and here." pointed to his head, his arm and his heart. The trio allowed Minnesota Twins only four hits Wednesday night, Ford keeping tight rein on the controls as he pitched New York Yankese to a 4-0 vic- tory and took over the Ameri- can League lead in shutouts and earned-run average. Making his 12th start, the 35- year-old lefty brought his rec- ord to 6-1 with his fourth shut- out and lowered is E.R.A. to a sparkling 1.53. Ford also is tied for the No. 1 spot in strikeouts with Dick Radatz of Boston Red Sox. Both have 68. How does Ford, who had a 4-7 record last year, do it? USES HEAD T i for a homer in the fourth in- ning. The Yankees then wrapped up their ifrst victory over the Twins in five games with a two-run eighth. BOOG BOOMS TWO Roberts got more than enough support as Boog Powell hit his 10th and 11th homers and Luis Aparicio and Willie Kirkland each hit one. Powell and Kirk- land connected back-to-back in the ninth inning. Horle, now 3-2, left after John Romano opened the In- dians' half of the ninth with a double as both Don Mossi and Hoyt Wilhelm came on to pre- serve the victory. Horlen drove Pittsburgh starter Vernon Law was struck on the right elbow by a'Herbel pitch in the sixth and had to leave the game Law, however, isn't expected to miss his next pitching turn ROJAS DOUBLES Don Drysdale held the Phil- lies to three hits until Cookie Rojas opened the 11th with a double. Ron Perranoski relieved Drysdale with one out, wa'ked Johnny Callison purposely, then got a force at second as Rojas moved to third. Rojas scored when Jim Gilliam fumbled Tony Gonzalez' grounder. Denny Lemaster won his sev enth game against two defeats, stopping the Reds on six hits; including Vada Pinson's home run in the sixth. But homers by Lee Maye in the sixth and Denis Menke in the seventh halted the Braves' four-game losing streak. The Cardinals stopped the Cubs' four-game winning streak and held Billy Williams hitless, Williams' league - leading av- erage dropped 10 points to .412: Ken Boyer cracked a three-run homer for St. Louis in the third, offsetting Ron Santo's three-run BASEBALL SCORES, STANDINGS By THE CANADIAN PRESS National League W iL Pet.
