'THE OSHAWA TIMES, Monday, June 15, 1964 BREAKS OWN WORLD RECORD POLE VAULT Fred Hansen, 23-year-old Texan, is. shown soaring to what will likely be recognized as a new world's record for the pole vault, as he cleared the bar at 17 feet, 2 inches, Saturday night in the San Diego Invitational meet, at Babboa Stadium, in San Die- go, California. The 6-foot, 168-pound. Hansen broke John Pennel's pending mark of 17 ft.'% inch, just. a week ago in the U.S, Federation district championships at Houston, Texas. -Pennel, of Miami, Florida, pressed Hansen all the way Saturday night, drop- ping out at the 17-2 mark,, when he sustained a bad fall on his second try. He was taken to hospital, for observa- tion of an injured back. Pen- nel holds the current recog- nized mark of 16-1014, Hansen tried three times at the 17-4 mark, but missed. --(AP Wirephoto) BASSETT TROPHY OLBC P air Wins Mixed Doubles Do A capacity entry of 32 pairs, @rawn from Lindsay, Whitby, Cobourg and Port Hope, as well as Oshawa, took part in the mixed doubles tournament for The Bassett Trophy, Saturday at the Oshawa Lawn Bowling Clab. Doug Laurie Sports 2-0 in a real thriller on Friday night at Leaside's Talbot Park but losing out 10-7 in a slug- fest, here at Kinsmen Memorial Stadium, on Saturday after- noon. HOMER DECIDES DUEL Friday night's .game was a for Oshawa and Mike Kilkenny for Laurie's Sports, waged a sensational pitching duel, each allowing only two hits, in a full nine-inning contest that was played in one hour and 44 min- utes. Nekkers struck out just three batters but also issued only one walk and backed by splendid support, especially by centre- fielder Roger Reeson, plus some good infield plays by Dave Fer- ries and Dave Mitchell, limited Laurie's to just two singles. Bill Lennard singled in the sec- ond inning and the next batter, Tom Estall hit into a double- play. his rival and right away, Roger Reeson came in to replace Nek- kers on the mound, struck out the first two batters he faced and got the next one to ground out, ending the game. Kilkenny gave up a hit to Ron Bell, with two out in the. first inning, which got Al Etchells, who got an earlier via an error, around to third base but that was that, In the sixth, Ian MacNamee opened with a walk, one of four given up by Kilkenny and Etch- ells followed with a home-run blow, to provide the only two runs of the game, and the Osh- awa victory. TOO MANY LEFT ON BASE Saturday afternoon's game at Kinsmen Stadium was of en- tirely different order, . with Legionnaires outhitting People's Credit Jewellers by 15-to-11 but suffering a 10-7 defeat because they left 11 runners stranded on the base-paths. Both teams used two pitchers, Ian O'Grady starting for Peo- ple's and giving way to Bob Hawton in the seventh. inning. Roger Reeson started _-- for Legionnaires and Al Etchells gave up his catcher's equip- ment and took over the mound, in the fourth inning, for Osh- awa. Oshawa drew more walks, O'Grady giving real sizzler as Gerry Nekkers Kilkenny got the other hit off up five and Jr. Legionnaires Blank Laurie's; Bow To People's Hawton three, as compared with nine by Reeson and five by Etchells but there were two other important factors that de- cided the issue. Legionnaires committed a gruesome total of seven errors while the visitors had only two and on top of that, there was the matter of extra-base blows. Oshawa had one double, by Ron Bell, and one triple, by Roger Reeson. Ian O'Grady hit both a triple and a homer to aid his cause while Bill Fallows also had a homer and Arch Yurkiw had a triple. Reeson didn't have it in this one. Two hits and a couple of errors started People's off with two runs in the first frame. Fallows' two-run homer, triple by Yurkiw and single by Chris McCarney meant three more runs in the fifth, including O'Grady's homer and three in the sixth, when. he tripled, and walked and three errors came up. Legionnaires got one run in the first, by MacNamee, aided by Ken Brack's RBI single. They got singletons in the fourth and fifth, a couple in the sixth and two in the 8th inning. Hawton had replaced O'Grady in the 7th. . Al Etchells, with a sacrifice, walk and three singles, had a perfect day at the plate. Ted Lutton, Ron Bell and Roger Reeson each had a pair of hits while Dave Mitchell had a big day, four solid singles in five trips to the plate. O'Grady, with his homer, triple and a single, in five trips, was best for the winners. Fal- lows and McCarney each had a couple.
