TRADE IMBALANCE New eZaland is interested in buying more machinery and in- dustrial products, from Ontario. However, at present, the imbal- ance of trade between the coun- tries is running two to one in Canada's favor. Therefore, Mr. Gray said, it is necessary for more of their products to be sold here, if New Zealand is to be able to increase her imports from Canada. They hope to earn 'more Canadian capitol by launching a sales campaign for high quality New Zealand lamb, especially in Ontario. These efforts to establish a market in Canada_ will conflict with Canadian farm producers. There are 50 million not} year, toward the European Common Market, and the in- creasing subsidization of United Kingdom Farmers by their government, New Zealand must look to new markets based on industry. New Zealand in striving for more anq new industry," Mr. Gray said, "wishes to enlist the technical know how of nations such as Canada, and to convince Canadian businessmen of the good opportunities opening up in that country. It is natural therefore, that the New Zealand government should be interested in more trade with cities like Youth Faces 7 Charges Auto Theft A 17-year-old youth has been charged with seven counts of auto theft following a rash of car thefts in Oshawa. The sus- pect was taken into custody after he drove a stolen vehicle into the yard of a local police officer. Thomas Donald Barker, 355 Verdun road, will appear in Magistrate's Court Monday charged with the offences. Constable C. W. Gallogely re- ported that a car drove into the yard of his Whitby home Wed- nesday night which he recog- nized as a vehicle reported stolen in Oshawa. He questioned the driver and later tvok him to the Oshawa Police Building. Police Chief Herbert Flintoff said today the charges relate to the theft of a car from: Wayne Hussey, 1523 Kalemount street, July 7; Gordon Murphy, 393 Centre street, July 4; Victor Willis, 933 Mary street, July 3; John Clatk, 625 Perry crescent, June 26; Harry John Bennett, $24 Pine street, June 15; Wil- liam Kirton, 113 Keridalwood Oshawa." He said that automobile parts and bodies are among the im- portant exports under considera- | sheep in New eZaland, as com- tion in connection with Oshawa. | SECOND SECTION THURSDAY, JULY 9, 1964 She Oshawa Times PAGE THIRTEEN With many projects still on its agenda the Oshawa Centen- nial Committee agreed Wednes- day night to postpone its meet- ings until Sept. 9. The members also agreed to extend the deadline..date for their proposal to city. council of a centennial project until Sept. 30. Most of the committee members realized at the last meeting it would be impossible ate to meet the previous deadline of July 15. The committee were original- ly faced with 36 proposals on which to spend the $200,000 cen- tennial money. These projects have now been narrowed down to about six. At Monday night's meeting the committee heard represen- tatives of two of the leading proposals -- Civic Auditorium Committee who want a swim- ming pool and Canadian Auto- motive Museum. who want the money for advancement. During the breakin meetings, James Williams, secretary of the Centennial Commi'tee will be gathering informatior, about prospective projects. SWIM AT PETERBOROUGH Terence V. Kelly, one of three representatives of the Centennial Committee, said Oshawa residents were going to Peterborough to use indoor swimming facilities. He said other cities of com- parable size with Oshawa were building more indoor pools. Said Mr. Kelly: "Kiddies are now learning to swim at Sim- coe Boys' Club. When they grow up they will still want fo swim as will their children." Mr. Kelly was asked if the pool was ever likely to become a white elephant. He said there was no chance of this and cited other cities where he had made studies of swimming habits. Mr. Kelly said swimming was a family sport enjoyed by peo- ple of all ages. He said: "Believe me, an in- door pool is of interest to the majority of citizens. Children are now being turned away from Simcoe Boys' Club -- so many want to use the pool." POOL SECOND CHOICE The Centennial Committee in- cluded representatives of all citizens of Oshawa, Mr. Kelly "Approve Rezoning Of Ballard Street Oshawa Planning Board Wed- nesday approved a rezoning to residential of the south side of Ballard street, east from Ritson road south to Edith street. At a public hearing at city hall on an application by Mr. and Mrs. J. Macko, now of Lake Worth, Fla., for a rezon- ing of one lot, only two out of some 12 area ratepayers voted to keep the south side of the street's industrial zoning. Lawyer Arleigh Hillman told the board that prior to M1B (in- dustrial) zoning in 1947 several "nice homes" were built, "If my client's lot were to be put to an industrial use it could have a tremendous effect 'on home owners," he said, =< :=|Project Deadline Set For Sept. 30 said, and in a survey he had headed for the Auditorium Committee, he found that most of all an arena as needed and second a swimming pool. He said the Auaitorium Com- mittee had bought sufficient land to build many facilities including a theatre and swim- ming pool. But many financial pledges had been made under the understanding that a pool be given second priority to an arena. After the pool was built, Mr. Kelly said, a theatre might well be provided by the committee. _ He said the auditorium com- mittee could raise $100,000 in pledges by September if the Centennial Committee gave its $200,000 grant. It is estimated that $300,000 will be needed to build a good indoor pooi. Other representatives of the Auditorium Committee present were E. R. S. Mclaughlin, chairman and the architect, Peter Allward. PLAN THEATRE Mr. McLaughlin said that as much variety as poss'bie had been designed into the audi- torium building. He said a the- atre was always in the minds of the committee and it intended to build one on the site a3 soon as was possible. : Herbert Robinson, represent- ing the Canadian Automotive Museum, said that people from all over the continent visited the museum. The museum is applying for the centennial grant to buy and improve the present premises. Mr. Robi said the will attract more people to Osh- awa and at the same time be self supporting. 2,000 Haar U.S. Band ance by the Milwaukee Contin- ental Youth Band was given at the McLaughlin Band Shell Wednesday, July 8, at 8 p.m. The two-hour concert was spon- sored by the Simcoe Hall Boys' Club of Oshawa. The band is currently making a tour through Eastern Canada before appearing at the New York World's Fair later in the season. The band p&raded to the band-shell down Simcoe St. from the armories, The largest crowd of the year at the band- shell, well over 2,000, turned ut to hear the 125 piece band. In their performance. the young American group played selections ranging from the marches of Sausa and Filamore to the Broadway musicals of Rogers and Hammerstein. Mayor Gifford welcomed the band to Oshawa, calling them excellent ambassador of their country. Stewart Alton, chair- man of the Simcoe Hall Boys' Club, thanked the band for com- ing to Oshawa, and said he hoped they would return soon. The band next goes to Ottawa for a concert, and from there will continue on to Boston Fine Arts Festival, before appearing in New York, Distribute $9,400,000 Motors of Canada.
