They are to be found amon both the quarrrelling Cyprio factions, the Greeks and the Turks. They operate 'in small groups, sometimes as guerrillas skulking in the hills, sometimes quite openly as "policemen" blocking roads. The Turkish Cypriots, for ex-: ample, have at least a dozen roadblocks along the route be- tween Nicosia, the capital city, and the Kyrenia pass in the is- land's northern hills. They also operate in the hills around the pass. Whichever side they are on, the irregulars seem to be as careless and undisciplined as they are zealous. Brigadier A. James Tedlie of Montreal, commander of the United Nations Brigade in the Nicosia zone, says hardly a day goes by without him getting out his jeep at some roadblock to raid a local "policeman" for waving his loaded gun around like a toy. "In fact, when this happens, I tell them to take the bullets out of their guns and they do 1 This profusion of unofficial warriors and policemen has had tragic results in the country more often than in the city. From time to time a shepherd falls dead in the midst of his flock, his body pierced by a sniper's bullet. Cases of this kind have oc- curred most frequently in the Kyrenia Pass region. Canadian soldiers patrolling the region say that, while most shepherds have been trying to pursue their peaceful occupa- tion, a few act as scouts for their compatriots by driving their flocks to graze near "en- emy" positions. "This makes them nothing more nor less than combatant themselves," said one soldier. Expert Says Women Work For 29 Years OTTAWA (CP)--The average married woman today will work ebout 25 years outside her home, says Helen Traynor, newly appointed assistant to the director of the federal Jabor de- partment's women's bureau. This means that mature women, some of whom had never been given training in skilled work, will be entering the labor force in increasing numbers once their families are old enough. And it might be necessary to find short outs for teaching them the necessary skills as quickly as possible. Miss Traynor says an experi- mental course in nursing to be conducted for women between .|30 and 50 at the new Quo Vadis School: of Nursing in Toronto is being watched closely. The course, starting in Sep- tember, will offer mature women a chance to accomplish in a two - year course what younger women attempt in three. Examinations will be set by the College of Nurses of On- tario. Miss Traynor says education- ists will be interested in seeing how these mature women com- pared with younger women tak- ing the regular three - year course, Success might-mean the establishment of a pattern for opening up other professions to mature women. ~° Miss Traynor, assistant.to di- rector Marion V. Royce, is a commerce graduate of Sir George Williams University in Montreal. She was a youth counsellor with the National Employment Service in Mont- real from 1944 to 1957 and, be- fore taking her new job, she was in the economics and re- search branch of the labor de- partment. - NEWS IN BRIEF SUES STATE ALBANY, N.Y.
