Construction on the new On- tario County Court Building is nearing completion and the finishing touches to the in- terior are being hurriedly * applied to allow for the open- "Ing in September. In the upper photo the exterior of the stately building shows com- pletion. The raised portion of the building on the left is the County Council Chambers. Gardeners are working or the lawns and flower beds and at its opening in September the $1,500,000 building should be surrounded by greenery. The lower photo was taken in the PREMIER TO ATTEND Magistrates Court Room. In the background of the picture workmen are erecting the raised portion that will house the Magistrate's chair. There will be four court rooms in the new building where justice will be dealt at all leevis; --Oshawa Times Photo County Court House Nears Grand Opening The Hon, John Robarts, Prime Minister of the Province of On- tario, will officially open the new Ontario County Building on September 30. His acceptance to the Ontario | County's invitation to open the building was announced to the Times yesterday by Bill ---s ning, county clerk. Mr. Robarts will be just one of a host of dignitaries, both civic and from the judiciary, who will ceremony. A special County Council com- mittee is now sitting to finalize all the details. It is expected that invitations will be going out within the next two or three weeks. "Doc" McEwen Out Of Hospital Whitby's Assistant, Clerk- Treasurer, F . "Doc" Me- Ewen, is at home resting after a stay in the hospital. Several weeks ago "Doc" was rusheq to the OGH after falling into the town grease pit on Victoria street. He suffered a severe concus- sion in the fall and a possible fracture of the back of his head. He is expected to return to work Monday, according to his wife: "if only to spend a par- tial day." Following Mr. McEwan's fall into the grease pit the Town Fathers at their last meeting of Council decided to, study ways attend the opening HON. JOHN ROBARTS Meanwhile, the new building, high above the town on Ross- land road, is gradually nearing completion. Most of the work now is going on in the interior of the $1,500,000 project. Final dabs of paint are being applied and fittings for the court rooms installed. The opening ceremony will be followed on September 30 by a massive banquet which will probably be held in Oshawa. The new. building, which stands on 15 acres of spacious grounds, is divided into three sections. The east wing will house the new offices of the county council and means of making the grease pit safer. plus a palatial and spacious new council chamber for county council sittings. Departments of the county ad- ministration will also have their offices in this wing. The centre section will be oc- ' cupied almost entirely by court rooms. There will be separate court rooms for Magistrates, County, Family and Supreme Courts. Last of the three sections will house the caretaker's apartment and offices for court officials. F Calls for those unfortunate per- / sons who will appear in court 2 are also in this part. The building is expected to go . into operation sometime in early September. Asked about this yesetrday county clerk Bill Manning could give no definite date although he expected it to be in operation two or three weeks before the to' ber of Commerce the scheme has successfully passed through all the necessary preparatory stages, Drawings and detailed plans have been prepared. The town merchants now know what the finished job will look like. With this information before them they now have to get to- gether and decide whether or not they will go ahead with the project, This meeting, Chamber Presi- dent John Pantony told the |Times yesterday, will definitely be held late this month, blue and white accessories and a pink corsage. Sponsored by the town Cham-|18 Downtown-Renewal Plans To Go Before Merchants A date for the meeting will be set at the Chamber's regular monthly gathering on August At the decision meeting Traders will be asked to give a simple "'yes" or "no"'. If the answer is "no" the scheme will crash and much de- tailed planning and hard work by the Chamber will be wasted. But John Pantony is very op- timistic. "If you had asked me if I thought the scheme would suc- ceed six months ago,"' he said, "I would have had my doubts. Now though, everything seems to be going very well. Most of the traders seem to be for the scheme including some of the more influential. "We have now done all we can. It is' up to the members. I think we will win through." The scheme, broadly speak- ing, calls for a wholesale reno- vation and facelift for the down- town shopping centre. By so doing the Chamber hopes to attract more town resi- dents to do their shopping right here in Whitby instead of Toronto or Oshawa. The town traders have to pull together to make the scheme a success. One dissenter could ruin the whole effect of the fin- ished job. The architect employed by the Chamber to draw up plans and color schemes has seen to it that adjacent buildings will not clash. A line of shops will be reno- vated as one front. The finished job, in fact, will make Whitby a much smarter and more at- tractive area, RIOT OVER PRICES BOMBAY (AP)--Two persons were reported killed, 86 injured and 305 arrested in day-long food riots and related hooligan- ism Wednesday in Ahmedabad capital of India's Gujarat state.
