The goal by Heffernan came at the 18.14 mark of the third period and tied the game up, forcing the overtime. Dief In Spotlight At Ridings PC Picnic Chatting and shaking hands by the dozen a smiling John Diefenbaker spent several hours with his local party members at the annual Starr - Dymond - Walker picnic at Heber Down Farm on Saturday afternoon. Former Conservative. Prime Minister and now leader of the Opposition Mr, Diefenbaker arrived at the picnic shortly after 3 p.m. Well over 2,000 people were there to meet him as he walked into the picnic with Michael Starr, Member of Pariiament for Ontario Riding. And Mr. Diefenbaker lost no time in making friends with as many of them as He could. Shaking a hand here, stopping to chat there, he slowly moved) his way through the crowd. | One lady after introducing) herself went on to introduce her five children. Mr, Diefenbaker, smiling and laughing, shook hands with them all, | "I have always wanted to) meet you," sighed another lady as she vigorously shook the Mr. Diefenbaker had time to chat with everybody who press- ed forward to: shake his hand. Young and old alike received a few friendly words, There were those who just wanted to shake the man's hand and others who wanted to test him out on controversial sub- jects. A young boy pressed forward and offered Mr. Diefenbaker the controversial three maple leaf flag. Obviously startled Mr, Diefenbaker ignored the profer- red flag and moved on, An eager photographer who snapped the incident received a curt stare from the Opposition Leader and an order not to print "that shot." Later on in the afternoon an- other flag waver appeared byt he went almost unnoticed ex- cept by the host of pressmen who surrounded Mr. Diefebaker as he toured the picnic. After the speeches, Mr. Dief- enbaker resumed his chatting and hand-shaking. By 'this time, however, the steer-burgers wre being served. The animal had been roasted whole earlier in the day. Paus- ing from his labors, Mr. Diefen- baker grabbed a burger and stood chewing the appetizer. The annual picnic again proved a mighty success, Only one small shower sent the gath-| ered throng rushing for cover. | For the kids there were ump- teen races. Kick the shoe, three- legged, sack and egg and spoon races dominated the afternoon. Then, of course, there were, the} horse rides. | The Pickering.
